The University of St Andrews Tennis Club is continuing to develop very positively and build on its success in recent years. With a membership of just under 200, it is one of the largest sports clubs at the University. The programme caters for all levels of player from beginner to 1st team with coaching and competition to suit everyone.
We have 4 Women’s and 4 Men’s teams playing in BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) Leagues. Our Men’s 1st Team are in Scottish Division 1 and finished 3rd in the 2015-16 season. Our Women’s 1st and 2nd were both in Scottish Division 1 in 2015-16 with the 1st narrowly missing out on the title by one point. We also compete in the LTA AEGON Team Tennis (Scottish National Leagues) where this year our Men finished 4th in Scottish div 1 and our Women came 4th in Division 1.
The Club runs singles box leagues for squad and non-squad players as well as timed tournaments for the social players. Social coaching classes, led by our qualified student coaching team run at beginner, intermediate, and advanced level. We hold two social tennis sessions a week which are drop in sessions, supervised but not coached. Every second week we run a cardio tennis session in one of our social tennis sessions, free for all members.
Squad training sessions are held for the Men’s women’s A and B squads twice a week. We are fortunate to have a full time Director of Tennis, Mike Aitken, who is responsible for running the Tennis Programme for the Team Squads.
As well as squad training sessions, the Squad Tennis Programme includes individual sessions, match attendance, and video analysis. The squad players also have excellent support services from the University’s Health and Fitness specialists and Physio.
The Club also has a two student Tennis Ambassadors who lead a group of volunteers who are involved in Community engagement programmes such as school visits to deliver tennis taster sessions, and school tournament festivals for the local schools. This year for the first time, we have 3 volunteers going to Zambia for 3 weeks to help deliver tennis to clubs and coaches.
Prospective tennis coaches from among the student body are mentored through the various Coaching levels and assisted financially.
We have very exciting plans to build a 4 court Indoor Tennis Hall in 2017. If this project comes to fruition this will be a huge boost not just for the student tennis programme but for the local and wider tennis community.
