700 Rugby

Founded in 1858, the University of St Andrews Rugby Football Club is one of the oldest sports clubs at the University and one of the oldest rugby clubs in the world. In the 1860s St Andrews was known as the nursery of rugby football in Scotland, with the first batch of famous players just before the days of internationals being St Andrews men. With roots deep in the history of Scottish Rugby, the club is a Founder Member of the Scottish Rugby Union (SRU) and has produced 22 International Rugby players who between them have gained 150 international caps, 4 have having played for the British & Irish Lions and 8 players who have represented the Barbarians. The Women’s Section of the Rugby Club was founded in 1978 and has consistently been in the top two teams in Scotland over the past 5-10 years.

The appointment of a full time Director of Rugby in 2009 was the first of its kind in Scottish University Sport and shows the commitment and desire that the University has to allow the Club to become a major force once again in Scottish Rugby.

The club turns out five teams on a Wednesday in British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) leagues. The Men's 1st XV squad competes in BUCS Premier North and Women's 1st XV play in BUCS Scottish Division 1A. Both squads also compete in the UK wide BUCS Cup competition, regularly travelling around the UK for fixtures.

The rugby pitches at University Park are renowned across the country as amongst the finest in Scotland. We currently have 3 grass rugby pitches which are played on all year round and maintained by full time ground staff. The 1st XV pitch has its own stand which can seat up to 200 spectators. University Park is also the home of a full size World Rugby approved floodlit 3G synthetic pitch which is used as a training facility throughout the year and a venue for a series of regular evening matches.

Scottish Varsity Match

Every year in September, Scotland's two oldest Universities compete for the Scottish Varsity Match, in front of a bumper crowd of students, alumni, parents and friends. The match between the University of St Andrews and their oldest rivals Edinburgh dates back more than 150 years and is the oldest varsity match in the world and the pinnacle of Scottish student rugby. In 2015 the match returned to Scotland after four successful years in London at the Richmond Athletic Ground. Sponsored by the Royal Bank of Scotland, both Men's and Women's 1st XVs competed on the international pitch at BT Murrayfield in front of a crowd of over 10,000 spectators.
