Allan Gartshore

Strength & Conditioning Manager

Allan Gartshore has worked within the Department of Sport and Exercise for several years now and brings a wealth of practical training experience to the table. Having competed in several different sports (including football, kickboxing and triathlon) he understands what it takes to compete at a high level.

Over the years Allan has picked up many fitness qualifications and has several years experience working as a Personal Trainer and Gym Instructor, before moving into a more sports performance based role. Allan has been an Accredited Strength and Conditioning Coach (ASCC), with the UK Strength and Conditioning Association since 2008 and continues to attend all the workshop and conferences available, to ensure he remains at the cutting edge of applied research.

As well as his work for the University, Allan also works part-time with the Scottish Institute of Sport, as a Strength and Conditioning Coach, as well as working with Dundee United Football Club - providing both field based, and gym based strength and conditioning support.

In 2009 Allan was instrumental in launching the successful Saints Sport Intern programme, which provides University students with the opportunity to gain practical experience working in the sporting environment. This initiative continues to gain momentum and is becoming a much sought after commodity for the University students.

Allan is passionate about his job and is always reading the latest scientific sports journals and publications, but he also enjoys trawling the internet for anything that will broaden his training knowledge.

Claire Tracey

Strength & Conditioning Coach

Claire Tracey has worked in the industry for a number of years, having completed her Masters in Strength and Conditioning in 2013. Her research project “Effect of ischemic preconditioning on repeated sprint ability in team sport athletes” was published in 2014.

Having completed her UKSCA Accreditation in 2013, Claire now makes sure she stays on top of the current research and training methods to enable a continued development in her coaching and practice. Throughout her professional career she has worked for several years as a Personal Trainer in the fitness industry and coached her own athletes including Great British National Fencing Athletes, Junior National Tennis players and many club level teams including Spartan’s Woman’s FC.

Claire has had the chance to work next to and learn from some of the best coaches and athletes in the industry at Glasgow Warriors, Sportscotland Institute of Sport and Hamilton Academical FC, something she is very proud of. Recently working for Origin Fitness as their Master Trainer and Education Coordinator, Claire created and delivered a range of courses across the UK covering topics such as Weight Lifting. Delivering education is now something she would like to continue doing for the Performance Team here at St Andrews.

Claire has also competed in a number of different sports at a University and District level, including swimming, netball, trampoline, martial arts, and made the Varsity Rowing team at Queens University in Canada. This has allowed her to understand the demands of high performance sport within the University environment as both an athlete, and now as a coach.
