Jack Lynch To Represent Ireland in World U24 Ultimate Championships
Tuesday 04 July 2017
Saints Sport and Saints Ultimate are thrilled to announce third year student from Belfast, Jack Lynch, has been selected for the Irish Under 24’s Ultimate team. Jack will now begin training over the coming months to prepare for the 2018 World U24 Ultimate Championships, which will take place in Australia at the beginning of next year. The selection process was long and extremely competitive, with seventy players trialing, thirty eight selected for the Development Squad and then a further cut to twenty five athletes who now make up the finalised squad.
Jack has been playing ultimate in St Andrews since his very first day at the university, seeking out some players to throw with on move-in day of Fresher’s Week. Since joining the team, he has played with the men’s firsts, contributing to some great victories over the years such winning the UK national championships in February and winning the Scottish 1A BUCS league two years in a row, going undefeated this year.
Before coming to university, Jack had already played for the Irish Under 17’s team and Under 20’s team, so had a considerable amount of experience under his belt. However, it wasn’t until he joined the team at university that he really began pushing himself with the strength and conditioning training and gym facilities offered to athletes in Performance Sport:
‘The professional aspect that Saints Sport brings to each club helps change the mindset of players and being part of Saints Sport and Ultimate has built my confidence hugely. I used to be satisfied with being a decent player so didn’t put in the extra effort, but now I really push myself in the gym, on the track and in the film room. I realised that not only could I be better, but I could be one of the best university players in the UK. Without the support from Saints Sport through the incredible facilities and the fantastic coaching from Benji Heywood, I would not be on this U24 squad.’
Jack comments further on his selection:
‘I am very proud to be representing my country again. It is a great feeling to to know that all the hard work I have put in pays off but hopefully this is only the start! The competition for this team was tough and required dedication, focus and high levels of motivation. It has brought out the best in me and I am happy it will continue to push me.’
Director of Ultimate, Benji Heywood, comments: ‘Jack is a big part of our success on and off the pitch. He was voted MVP of the team this year and he has been a pleasure to coach.’
The team at Saints Sport wish to congratulate Jack on his selection and are truly proud of this incredible achievement. Keep an eye on our social media pages for updates on Jack’s journey! #GoSaints #EverToExcel
