Coronavirus information - latest facility updates

We understand the importance of people being active and the particular role sport and exercise can have on our physical and mental wellbeing and will continue a phased reopening of our facilities and services as restrictions are lifted, and when it is safe to do so. This will follow the latest Scottish Government advice, Sports Governing Body guidelines, and in a way that helps to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Reopening University sports facilities and services

This section of our website will provide all the information you need to know about which facilities are now open, what services and activities we have started to reintroduce and any guidelines you need to follow for safely participating in sport and physical activity.

Latest update - from Monday 17 May

Following the latest Scottish Government announcement we are pleased to announce the next stage in our phased reopening of our facilities and services from Monday 17 May. Please note that restrictions will still be in place in line with the latest Scottish Government and Sports Governing Body advice and University guidelines.

Key updates:

  • Organised indoor non-contact sport can resume
  • Organised Outdoor contact sport can resume
  • Individual recreation sport is permitted adhering to current rules on meeting other households – tennis, badminton, table tennis 
  • All memberships will restart on 17 May
  • Changing rooms/showers are still closed
  • Water fountains are not in use
  • Toilets are available

Sports Centre opening times:

  • Monday - Friday: 06:30 - 21:00
  • Saturday - Sunday: 08:00 - 21:00

Gym at Walter Bower House now open

We are delighted to announce that the new Saints Sport gym at Walter Bower House is now open providing a dedicated workout space for staff based at Eden Campus.

Guidance for visitors

The guidelines outlined below have been developed to allow sports and fitness activity to be enjoyed in a way that is in line with Scottish Government advice and that helps to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Please read all the guidelines before making a booking or visiting the sports facilities.

Memberships

Memberships to resume on Monday 17 May

  • Please note that free access to the sports facilities will end on Sunday 16 May, after which you will be required to purchase a membership or pay for an activity ticket each time you visit.
  • Please note that all staff and community memberships that were frozen when the Sports Centre closed on 27 December at the start of the last lockdown will resume on 17 May.

New staff and community members

  • New staff and community memberships are now available to buy. Community one-month memberships cost £40 and there is a salary deduct membership option for staff. Alternatively, you can take out a 6 month or full year membership. For more information, or to join please contact our reception team:

Summer Student Membership

  • This year our annual Summer Student Membership will run from 17 May – 29 August and costs £78. University of St Andrews students can buy their membership online. If you are a visiting student, please contact our reception team to join.

Outdoor facilities

What is allowed?

  • From Monday 17 May organised outdoor contact sport can resume
  • 'Organised sporting or physical activity' refers to activities which are undertaken in a structured and managed way following specific rules and guidance of relevant SGBs, local authorities or businesses who in turn have fully applied related Scottish Government and sportscotland guidance. All organised activity should be overseen by a Covid Officer with documented risk assessments undertaken and mitigating actions put in place to ensure the health, safety and welfare or participants, coaches and officials.
  • 'Contact sport or activity' is defined as a sport or activity in which the participants necessarily come into bodily contact or as a matter of course encroach within 2m of one another, such as Judo, Netball and Basketball.
  • Please note that we are not currently accepting casual group bookings

Facilities available to book

The following outdoor facilities can be booked:

  • Outdoor tennis courts
  • Grass pitches (clubs and groups)

Who can book?

  • Bookings can be made by members, non-members and external clubs and groups

Important information

  • Facilities are available during opening hours, 7 days a week
  • Visitors are recommended to bring their own equipment (balls, tennis rackets, etc.) where possible
  • Hired equipment must be cleaned before being returned, using the cleaning products provided

On arrival

  • Please make your way directly to your designated pitch/court (outdoor tennis and the Sand-dressed pitch can be accessed via the main reception)
  • Maintain a 2m distance from other users at all times
  • Avoid touching gates, fences, benches, etc.
  • Allow others to leave before you enter the facility, where relevant
  • Please wait for the current action to finish before entering if games are already taking place
  • If you need to wait, then do so away from the pitch or court and clear of the gates
  • Ensure you leave the pitch or court before the end of your allotted time so that it is empty for the next players
  • Entrance to the outdoor tennis courts is via the gate next to the running track. The sand-dressed pitch can be accessed by the side gate from the path to Andrew Melville Hall

Fitness classes and services

Fitness classes

  • Our new fitness class programme will start on Monday 17 May, including the reintroduction of some indoor classes    

Who can book?

  • Classes can be booked by all University of St Andrews students and staff and current community members
  • Classes can be booked online or by contacting our reception team:

Personal training

  • Our team of professional trainers are now offering indoor and outdoor PT sessions
  • The team can tailor an exercise plan to meet your fitness goals or offer greater support over a longer time period via our one-to-one block sessions

Gym

No need to book

  • From Monday 24 May the gym will revert to normal operating procedures and no booking will be required
  • The gym will be available during Sports Centre opening times
  • Please use the live gym tracker on the Saints Sport homepage to monitor capacity

Important information:

  • The capacity of the gym will remain at 50 to adhere to physical distancing guidelines
  • Face coverings must be used indoors in all communal areas and only taken off to train/workout
  • Spray bottles will be made available outside the gym entrance - please pick up your personal bottle and return once finished to the Sports Assistants' desk
  • No lockers or showers are available
  • Coats can be stored within the gym at designated coat racks

On arrival

  • On arrival, please enter via the main reception
  • Maintain a 2m distance from other users at all times
  • Entrance to the gym will be via the main gym turnstiles - please ensure to bring your membership card with you

Indoor facilities

What is allowed?

  • From Monday 17 May organised indoor non-contact sport can resume.
  • 'Organised sporting or physical activity' refers to activities which are undertaken in a structured and managed way following specific rules and guidance of relevant SGBs, local authorities or businesses who in turn have fully applied related Scottish Government and sportscotland guidance. All organised activity should be overseen by a Covid Officer with documented risk assessments undertaken and mitigating actions put in place to ensure the health, safety and welfare or participants, coaches and officials.
  • 'Non-contact sport or activity' is defined as a sport or activity in which the participants are physically separated by playing rules such as to make it difficult for them to make physical contact during an activity.

Facilities available to book

The following indoor facilities can be booked for non-contact sport:

  • Indoor tennis court
  • Badminton court
  • Table tennis

Please note:

  • the climbing wall will remain closed until further notice
  • the Sports Arena is being used to house the University's Covid-19 Testing Centre and is unavailable for sport bookings
  • all indoor sports facility bookings must abide by the Scottish Government’s current rules on meeting other households: a maximum of 6 adults from 3 separate households

  • Facility bookings can be made by all University of St Andrews students and staff and current community members

Important information

Travelling to the Sports Centre

  • No changing facilities will be available, so please come dressed ready to workout/play
  • Where possible arrive on foot or by bike, but if you do drive the Sports Centre car park will be open
  • Arrive as close as possible to your booking start time, but no more than 5 minutes prior to the start

Health, safety and hygiene

  • Face coverings must be used indoors in all communal areas and only taken off to train/workout
  • Visitors must adhere to the Scottish Government’s physical distancing guidelines at all times
  • Hand sanitiser will be available at the entrance and throughout the Sports Centre, but it is recommended to bring hand sanitiser with you
  • No changing, showers or locker facilities will be available
  • We appreciate that some personal training aids/belongings may be required (e.g. weightlifting belts, shoes, straps, sports equipment), but please keep these to a minimum
  • No bags, towels or chalk will be permitted in the building and you will need to keep belongings with you at all times. Staff reserve the right to refuse the use of personal equipment should it be regarded as unsafe or if its use will be in contravention to health guidelines
  • Please bring your own water/water bottle – no water will be available onsite
  • Toilet facilities will be available
  • Please clean and wipe down any equipment or machines you use - cleaning stations will be in place throughout the gym

Personal fitness

  • Given the length of time sports activity has been suspended, it is advised that anyone returning to play eases themselves back in gently.
  • All facility users MUST read and answer the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PARQ) in the Sports Centre Terms and Conditions prior to using any of the facilities at University Park. If you are in any doubt, please obtain medical advice before using any of our facilities.

First aid

  • Saints Sport staff will provide first aid effectively whilst mitigating the risk from COVID-19
  • PPE will be worn by all staff providing first aid and if possible and appropriate, casualties may also be encouraged to wear a face mask (supplied by Saints Sport)
  • a portable defibrillator is accessible in appropriate circumstances, located on the corner of the Sport Centre’s external wall adjacent to the gym

How to book

Walter Bower House Gym

We are delighted to announce that the new Saints Sport gym at Walter Bower House will open for the first time on Monday 26 April in line with the latest Scottish Government guidelines.

Information for WBH Gym Members

Opening

  • The gym will be open 6:30am - 9:45pm Monday to Friday from 26 April 

Free access for WBH staff until 17 May

  • Gym access will be free for all WBH staff until 17 May when memberships will start
  • No booking is required, but swipe access will be in place

Memberships

  • WBH staff can choose between full Saints Sport membership and WBH-only membership
  • Memberships can be bought via the Sports Centre reception:

Important information:

  • The capacity of the WBH gym has been reduced to six to adhere to physical distancing guidelines
  • Access will be on a first-come-first-served basis initially, but a booking system will be implemented if there is sufficient demand
  • We ask you to be mindful of other users and restrict your sessions to a maximum of one hour and to one session per person per day

In the facility

  • Please note that you will need your staff id card to access the gym
  • Please maintain a 2m distance from other users at all times
  • Please clean and wipe down any equipment or machines you use - cleaning stations will be in place throughout the gym
  • A member of Saints Sport staff will be present in the gym during week 1 Monday - Friday to answer any questions
  • The gym has a selection of both cardiovascular and strength equipment including: treadmills, an elliptical cross trainer, a running machine, a rowing machine, indoor cycling bikes, a multigym training station, a Smith machine, workout benches and a selection of dumbbells and stretch mats

Privacy notice: COVID-19 track and trace

The University of St Andrews (“the University”) is collecting and recording the contact details of individuals who make use of the Saint Sports Facilities, to support NHS Scotland’s COVID-19 track and trace scheme.

Your contact details will be used to enable NHS Scotland to contact you should you have been in the premises around the same time as someone who has tested positive for coronavirus. Contacting people who might have been exposed to the virus is an important step in containing any spread.
