Gary is responsible for developing sports initiatives and programmes for students and staff at the University, as well as children in the local community. Please contact him if you have any questions regarding the Hall Sport programme, student and staff golf lessons or any of the Junior Saints activities, which include preschool and afterschool multisport sessions, football sessions and Easter and Summer holiday sports camps. Gary is a keen golfer and football fan and can be regularly seen taking part in the Saints 6 a-side football leagues.

A member of the Saints Sport team since April 2012 when he joined from the University of Abertay Dundee, Pete has been Assistant Director (Student Sport) since April 2016.  Pete’s role is largely club support, including those clubs that are part of the Performance programme.  Alongside this Pete plays a role in supporting the Athletic Union President and Executive to enhance the student experience and improve opportunities to participate in sport at all levels.

Elaine Finlay manages the fixtures and administration of the Athletic Union. Fixtures include the scheduling of matches against universities in Scotland and throughout the UK, encompassing SSS and BUCS leagues. Elaine is also responsible for assisting with the general day-to-day running of the AU and has vast experience in dealing with the whole array of operations. She is also ultimately responsible for the health and safety of all student sport and is also the contact between the university and the Links Trust for all students.

Allan's main role is to manage the Strength and Conditioning support services. As part of the management team it is Allan's job to ensure all our University sports teams, individual athletes, as well as the local talented athletes, receive the support they need to improve in their sport. This could be basic programming for athletes on the path to sports performance, or for athletes already performing at a national, or international level.

Allan works within a team of experts (including physiotherapists and physiologists), to ensure that the individual needs of athletes are catered for.

Ian oversees the operations at the sports centre as well as events, including pre season camps for professional teams. Please contact him if you have any feedback about the sports centre as a whole, or if you are interested in hosting a sports event or camp at the University. Ian was previously a footballer at Walsall FC and a former Loughborough student. During his student years Ian won BUSA (now BUCS) gold twice and represented England Universities and British Students. He is now a keen golfer and a member of The St Andrews Golf Club.

Fergus oversees all marketing and publicity of sport at the University, working with Admissions and Corporate Communications to manage the promotion and public image of the Saints Sport brand, in order to enhance the national and international standing of sport at St Andrews. His remitt also includes working closely with colleagues in Development to pursue various investment opportunities and engage with alumni, individuals and groups to encourage participation in sports fundraising. Fergus also heads up the marketing for the Wallace Group on behalf of the seven UK universities involved in the Volunteer Zambia Project. A double graduate from the University, Fergus joined the Saints Sport team in 2014 after four years as a Postdoc Research Fellow in the Department of Chemistry. During his time as a student Fergus represented the University at both cricket and rugby, gaining a half-blue in his first year and a full blue a year later, representing Scottish Universities from 2001-2007.

Callum manages the Saints Fitness exercise class timetable, co-ordinating the various instructors and trainers, and also oversees all Personal Training services at the University Sport Centre.

Saints Sport works with Fife Sport and Leisure Trust to offer referral classes to people in the local community and Callum has managed to grow the programme to reach almost 50 referral patients in any given week. He also works closely with Occupational Health to provide consultations and programmes to help staff members improve posture, cardiovascular health etc.

Part of Callum’s role is to instruct fitness classes and provide personal training – he prides himself on resistance training and the more technical aspects of barbell, dumbbell and kettlebell movements.

As a Basketball Coach/Fitness and Wellbeing Advisor previously for Nuffield Health – Callum started coaching the Women’s Basketball team at St Andrews in 2014 and took on the role of Health and Fitness Manager the following year.

Stephen has been the University's Director of Sport since January 2008. He is responsible for overseeing the Department and the services within. Previously Stephen was Loughborough University's Deputy Director of Sport and therefore has a wealth of experience in both elite and university sport. Rugby is Stephen's sport although he enjoys most sports. He is a keen Ulster and Ireland fan.

Fiona is the current elected AU president. Within the sabbatical position, Fiona represents the students' view in various forums: at the University and throughout Scottish Student Sport (SSS) and British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS). She is there to support all students who are involved in sports clubs and exercise at the university; whether that be on a club or individual basis. Responsibilities include chairing the Executive committee, leading developments in AU strategy and running AU operations. Working alongside University staff, she also aims to promote and progress student sport.

The Treasurer sets and monitors the AU budget and reports to the AU Executive on the AU's financial position on a regular basis. They are responsible for formulating a Club Financial Agreement between the AU and its affiliated clubs and supervises the actions of all club treasurers and ensures that all clubs are in control, recording and managing their finances effectively. The treasurer is also responsible for ensuring that the AU's financial procedures are in line with that of the University's.

The Events Officer provides support and advice to teams and clubs who wish to put on an event, whilst also helping to organise the big events run annually by the Athletic Union and Saints Sport.

The Development Officer role incorporates all activities which relate to alumni of the Athletic Union. Responsibilities include liaising with the University Development Office and AU Club Committees to gather future alumni contact details. The position manages the AU Alumni & Blues and Colours databases. Additional tasks include editing the AU Alumni newsletter, the AU Alumni Website, and managing the Hall of Fame.

The Media & Publicity Officer duties include the visual output of the Athletic Union, which includes the creation of posters, flyers, web graphics and the annual AU Club Guide. They are responsible for the integrity and development of the Saints Sport brand, for ensuring that a good amount of University sports photography and media is produced and that all clubs have an up to date website. Tasks also include developing and maintaining the Athletic Union websites, including the Club Management Portal

Mike has been in post since 2010 as Director of Tennis having previously spent 25 years as a tennis teaching professional.
His main roles are:

  • Developing the team players through coaching, analysis, creating more competitive opportunities for them, and encouraging them to take a lead role in their own development.
  • Working with the student committee to develop a club that encourages more students to play more tennis by catering for all members of different levels.
  • Working with the student volunteer group to help them gain teaching and leadership skills.
  • Working with all colleagues at Saints Sport to develop the provision of sport at the University and help create the best environment we can for all users.
  • Generating income for the University through the provision of tennis coaching.

Callum Knox

Head Coach of Women's Basketball

Callum currently  oversees all four of the University’s basketball teams (two Men’s and two Women’s) as well as coaching the Women’s 1s and 2s. He is a UKCC Level 2 Coach, a SportScotland Sports Educator and a Scottish Sports Futures Young Coach Mentor. This year Callum was named Head Coach of the Scottish Student Sport National Women’s Basketball Team – the first time a St Andrews Coach has had the honour. He is also part of the coaching staff for the National Under 16 Women’s Basketball Team, which will be competing in the Euro C Championships in Moldova in 2018.

In recent years, Callum has also led the Women’s 1s to two BUCS Scottish Division 1A titles, a promotion to Premier League, two quarter final runs in the BUCS Trophy and a National League Cup Final appearance. Along the way he has also received several personal awards for his contributions to the sport, the most prominent two being Saints Sport Coach of the Year in 2015, and BasketballScotland Development Coach of the Year in 2015. In 2016-2017 Callum was the Head Coach of the Scotland Under 15 National Development Squads, which competed in Barcelona, Spain. 

Callum’s current plan to improve the club is to put more resources and time into development and, with the introduction of the Women’s 2s this year competing in the BUCS championship, the club has already seen a rise in the standard of play across all teams. Using more video analysis and breakdown tools, the performance preparation in place continues to improve and will continue to do so as Saints Basketball moves forward.

As Director of Rugby at the University of St Andrews, Scott oversees all aspects of the rugby programme from performance on the field to community outreach and volunteer work off it. The rugby programme consists of four men’s teams and one women’s team who participate in BUCS weekly as well as different rugby events throughout Scotland. Our major event is The Scottish Varsity Match which is the oldest university fixture in the world and takes place against the University of Edinburgh at the home of Scottish Rugby, BT Murrayfield.

Scott joined the University from Newcastle Falcons, bringing a wealth of experience playing Premiership rugby for over a decade. He started his rugby career at Biggar RFC, before earning a professional contract at Glasgow Warriors, spending four seasons playing in the Pro12 before a move to the Premiership, spending a season with Sale before moving to Gloucester Rugby for four years.

Scott is a vastly experienced former Scotland international with 47 caps, which include a try-scoring performance in his team’s opening match of the 2007 Rugby World Cup while also appearing in the 2011 tournament. In addition to his playing commitments with Newcastle Falcons, Scott was Director of Rugby at National Two North Club Tynedale RFC, having previously been an Elite Specialist Skills Coach with Scottish Rugby.

Stuart has been the Director of Football at the University since January 2011 and in that time has overseen a major growth in the Performance Football Programme. Stuart, a UEFA A Licensed coach has the overall responsibility for the planning and organising of the programme which consists of six competitive men's teams and three competitive women's in addition to development squads. Aside from the performance programme Stuart also works on a number of community football programmes with external bodies which includes the annual hosting of Academy Scotland pre season tournaments, Midnight league football for local teenagers and work with the local Community Football Club.

Iain Rice joined the University as Director of Rowing in 2014. He previously coached as a Henley Stewards Coach at St Andrew Boat Club (Edinburgh) and Strathclyde Park Rowing Club (Hamilton). Iain has also coached at Glasgow University Boat Club as Head Coach, Senior Men’s coach, and Novice Men's Coach. Through Iain’s career, he has helped athletes gain selection into the Scottish Home countries team and qualify for Henley Royal Regatta. In his own rowing career, Iain has won an Irish Junior Championship, competed for Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Scotland. In 2008 he competed in the M8+ at the European Universities Regatta.

Scott is one of the centre's Sports Assistants and holds a Level 3 Personal Training and Sports Nutrition qualification. Scott's main specialities are in the areas of weight management & fitness, and injury rehabilitation. In his youth Scott was a keen footballer having signed professionally with Heart of Midlothian F.C. and has previously worked as a junior and senior football coach.

Richard is one of the centre's Duty Managers and is responsible for the day to day running of the facilities. In addition to this role he also heads up the Saint Sports First Aid Training Centre and as an experienced trainer, delivers and assessors a range of first aid programmes. Having joined the team in 2016 he brings with him a wealth of student sport experience having previously worked for the University of Dundee (Institute of Sport and Exercise). A background firmly embedded in sport, Richard holds an honours degree in Sport, Health and Exercise and as an avid hockey player has represented several hockey clubs as both a player and coach at regional and national league level.

He is a fully qualified first aid trainer assessor, regularly delivering first aid courses from the Sports Centre. Scott is a keen gym user and can regularly be seen in the gym in his own time. Having grown up in St Andrews he is keen golfer and a member of The St Andrews Golf Club.

Ailsa is a qualified Instructor in Exercise to Music, Zumba and Studio Weight Resistance. With a passion for dance Ailsa can often be found leading classes in the Studio. Alongside her core Zumba classes she also teaches Hiit, Circuits, Fit Blast and Workshop Workout. 

Ailsa is keen to use her enthusiasm and skills to promote fitness and wellbeing for as many participants as possible using Zumba to assist in fundraising for the Volunteer Zambia Project, local children’s charities, as well as completing preseason workouts for University sports clubs. 

She is a regular gym user and as a Level 2 qualified full time Sports Assistant is keen to help all users with their fitness questions whilst assisting with the smooth operation of the Sports Centre.

Fraser is one of the centres Sport Assistants and act-up Duty Managers, responsible for facility set ups prior to users arrival and events, along with general building operations and emergency first aid.

Fraser holds a Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification and is currently studying an Advanced Diploma in Nutrition and Sports Supplementation. Feel free to approach him with any questions on the use of gym equipment and general fitness. In his spare time Fraser plays rugby and holds a 5 handicap as a member of the Dukes golf course.

Ali is a Level 3 qualified personal trainer with a passion for sport and exercise. He keeps up to date with current exercise trends and weight training methods, constantly expanding his knowledge through CPD and assisting clients and gym users. He supports the centre’s exercise instructors teaching activities such as Hiit and Circuits and has previously coached local rugby teams. 

Ali was selected to represent the University as a staff member with the Wallace Group on the Volunteer Zambia Project; coaching, contributing to outreach projects and overseeing a group of volunteers. 

As a full time Sports Assistant Ali is keen to support all gym users with basic queries or delivering gym introduction programmes as well as assisting with the smooth operating of the Sports Centre.

One of three Duty Managers responsible for the daily operation of the Sports Centre Tara has a wealth of service experience with a background in hospitality management. A St Andrews graduate, founding member of the Korfball club and parent who’s children hugely enjoyed the Junior Saints programme, she is delighted to return to the University to assist in providing support for the flourishing University sporting environment.
