We recognise, now more than ever, the importance of being active and the positive effects that taking part in sport and exercise can have on our physical and mental wellbeing and social inclusion.

Under the current restrictions, participation in sport and physical activity offers a valuable outlet for students to socialise in a safe and responsible manner.

We are passionate about increasing levels of participation across our whole community and will continue to expand our programmes when it is safe to do so and in line with Scottish Government and University guidelines.

Sport plays a significant part in student life at St Andrews and whether you compete at national or international level, play socially or want to get fit, there are more than 50 sports clubs and sector-leading facilities waiting for you.

Club sport

The 50+ sports clubs at St Andrews offer activities for all levels of ability and aspiration.

Whether that is competitive or recreational, reaching the pinnacle of your sporting career, having fun playing the sport you love or trying a sport for the very first time, the variety of sports available ensures there is an activity for everyone.

To meet the demand in sporting activity this Semester we have introduced a brand-new series of daily fitness classes available exclusively to our student sports clubs.

For the 2020-21 academic year, all our clubs will provide some form of activity, but under restrictions adhering to Scottish Government and Sports Governing Body guidelines.

Recreational sport

Rather than the regular commitment required for training and competing, individual clubs together with Saints Sport run frequent, informal drop-in sessions where the emphasis is on having fun and participation.

All our clubs offer recreational membership options so students can benefit from the fitness and social aspects of their sport without needing to compete.

We believe that everyone should get the chance to be involved in sport, so we are offering FREE sport on Saturday mornings for ALL of our students.

From disc golf to dodgeball, we have a new activity each week so why not gather some friends and come along and join us.

Golf lessons

With access to world class instruction and cutting-edge technology, there is no better place in the world to learn to play than the Home of Golf.

During Semester time Saints Sport partners with the St Andrews Links Trust to offer a range of golf lessons to students of all abilities and aspiration.

Lessons are delivered by PGA-Qualified instructors from the St  Andrews Links Golf Academy and have been developed to offer opportunity for progression and a clear pathway for improving your game.

Recreational Sport for Societies

Are you part of a society? Saints Sport is working in partnership with the Students’ Association to offer free Tuesday night recreational sport sessions specifically for societies and subcommittees.

This is an opportunity to take part in a fun, in-person activity with your society during a time when lots of other in-person events aren’t possible. Get in touch with your society if you want to take part and they can get you signed up.

Saints Fitness

The Saints Fitness programme offers a full range of services to all our students.

Our varied exercise class programme runs all-year- round and is tailored to suit all levels and abilities.

We are currently running a reduced programme to adhere to physical distancing requirements, but we will soon be expanding our programme and introducing live sessions and classes on demand.

For those with specific fitness goals or regular gym users looking to refresh their exercise routine, our team of personal training are here to offer you a motivating, challenging and fun alternative for your workout.

Saints Sport offers students a wide range of sporting activities, fitness classes and professional services, and some of the best facilities in Scotland.

Saints Sport student membership gives you full access to:

  • the main gym
  • the Saints Fitness class programme

Coaching and volunteering

Sports clubs are an integral part of the unique student experience and with the vast majority being student led and run, many of our club coaches and match officials come from within the student body.

You don’t need to train or compete to get involved. The  Saints Leadership, Coaching and Volunteering Experience provides a range of opportunities and supports over 500 volunteers who help deliver student sport activity for more than 4,000 students throughout the academic year.

To ensure student led clubs offer the best possible experience for their members we offer course subsidies to support the training and development of coaches and officials and run a Coaching and Leadership Academy to develop skills, knowledge and confidence for those in leadership positions within sport.
