Water Polo Club - Semester 1 Report 2016-17
Saturday 28 January 2017
Both Men’s and Women’s Water Polo have had a very successful first half of the season. The Men’s Team are top of BUCS Scottish 1A league after an extremely impressive win against Edinburgh 2nds. They came from 7-8 down to win 9-8 in the final minute. They have won all their matches except for a tight away loss against Dundee and are on course for winning the league for a second year in a row. They face a very busy run of matches after the holidays with at least eight matches in just over six weeks. However, our extensive training schedule should help pull them through this and hopefully we will see them progress into the later stages of the BUCS trophy.
The Women’s Team faced a tough season after recently being promoted into the Premier League. They were extremely excited about seeing new challenges after such a successful season last year of winning the BUCS Scottish 1A league, the BUCS trophy and then promotion in the play-off matches. Our first Premier League win came against Loughborough with the score being 19-6. This was a huge win over the biggest sporting university in Britain and testament to the hard work all of the girls have put in. The team then continued to learn from playing against some of the best teams in the country and really improved their game before travelling all the way down to play Sheffield Hallam. We came away with an absolutely incredible 11-10 win against last year’s BUCS champions, especially considering they had two GB players. We face Hallam at home next semester and a win should see us qualify for the Super 8s. The Women also collected their first trophy of the year by winning the Granite City Cup at RGU. Congratulations to everyone that played and in particular to our Freshers who made up a large part of this team.
The achievements made so far this year would not have been possible without our amazing coaches. A huge thank you goes to Ian, Alison and our S&C coach Luke! We have an extensive training schedule of three early morning swim sessions, two S&C sessions and then four water polo sessions, two of which are in Dundee, each week. The commitment put in by all of our players is huge and that’s not including all the travel round England and Scotland. But it has definitely paid off with the Men now top of their league and the Women contending in the Premier League and looking extremely likely for qualifying for the Super 8s. So huge congratulations to all our players and coaches for the season so far and let’s continue this form into the New Year!
