Ultimate Frisbee Club - Semester 1 Report 2016-17

Saturday 28 January 2017

It has been yet another successful semester for Ultimate Frisbee in St Andrews. After a well-attended pre-season, followed by a good recruitment at Freshers’ events the semester kicked off to a good start.

Ultimate 1

The first competitive match of the semester was the mixed outdoor team against Edinburgh as part of the Kingdom v Capital day. Despite the difficult windy conditions St Andrews won on universe point.

With a new mix of beginners this year the club had early success at the beginner tournaments at the start of the semester, winning the Glasgow One Day beginner division and narrowly missing out in the final at the Edinburgh Beginners tournament.

The mixed indoor team came second in the final at regionals, qualifying for Division 1 of nationals. Unfortunately due to academic commitments we were unable to send a team to Nationals.

Ultimate 2

The Women’s side of the club sent two teams to indoor regionals. The 1st Team secured fifth place and qualified for indoor nationals, being the first Women’s St Andrews team in a few years to qualify.

As the BUCS league continues for the Men’s 1st Team they are currently undefeated sitting top of the league and look to hopefully continue the success into the next semester. The 2nd Team, as the only second team in Scotland is looking good having beaten Stirling’s 1st Team.

Our Men’s indoor 1st Team finished in second place at regionals qualifying for Division 1 nationals, which takes place next semester. The 2nd indoor team also played well at indoor regionals and just missed out on place at nationals. Despite being a much smaller university we also managed to put forward a 3rd and 4th team to indoor regionals, giving more new players the opportunity to play competitively.

This semester also saw trials for GB U24 teams, and six players from St Andrews have been chosen for the development squad. These players will be taking part in trainings for the squad over the next few months with the hope of playing at the World Championships in Australia in 2018.
