Squash Club - Semester 1 Report 2016-17
Saturday 28 January 2017
This semester has been a step in the right direction for the squash club with record membership and all our sessions busier than ever. The beginners and intermediate sessions are always packed which is great for the club, as we have never had this many social players before. The social side of the club has also been great with Sinners becoming a popular part of the squash club’s culture and we hope that this connection flourishes further in Semester 2.
This semester has definitely had more competitive squash than ever before, with several tournaments having been arranged. The Men’s Team hasn’t had the start to the year we would have hoped for, however, as we lost the varsity against Edinburgh convincingly and currently sit 5th in both BUCS and the DDRSA leagues. Work commitments and a significant number of injuries have meant we are yet to field our strongest team, but Clayton Rice and Steve Hierons should be highlighted for having played some delightful squash this semester.
The Women’s Team was hit really hard at the end of last year with most of the team graduating. This year has therefore been very difficult, but under the incredible captaincy of Ruby Woos they have managed to develop their new side. Yet to play in BUCS, the team is going well in the local league with Ruby playing very well backed up by the rest of the squad.
Both teams are very fortunate to have had sessions with Mark Beaumont, who is an incredible coach. These sessions have been hugely beneficial and are essential for the development of the Squash Club. Overall this semester has been very rewarding and the Squash Club is definitely moving in the right direction. This is a great foundation for next semester and we will definitely be looking to build on it.
