Women's Lacrosse Club - Semester 1 Report 2016-17

Saturday 28 January 2017

It has been a busy term for the Women’s Lacrosse Club. The semester got off to a great start with a strong turnout this year for pre-season, and a productive training schedule to get us fit and ready for the big season ahead. A great effort from the committee to promote the club also saw a huge turnout at the give-it-a-go day and plenty of interest at the Sports Fayre, resulting in the club’s largest number of memberships to date at 85. In the first week of training, we were delighted to have Scotland’s Senior Women’s Assistant Coach, Lauren Goerz, deliver up to 9 hours of coaching.

This term saw the instalment of a new Development Squad to accommodate the growing number of new players to the club. Members of the committee coached the squad with help from returning President, Georgia Flannagan. The squad had a few matches this term, with a great result against Edinburgh’s Development Squad, which they won 15-3. Some of this squad also played in the newly established Lacrosse Scotland Freshers’ Cup, where the girls made it through to the semi-finals.

The 1st Team has had a successful season and remain at the top of BUCS Scottish 1A league with only a couple more matches to go! The 2nd Team, who play in the same league, have had some tough competition, but have done well with great results against Glasgow 2nds and Edinburgh 3rds. With a few more matches to come, they are set to finish in an improved position than previous years. In the Lacrosse Scotland Women’s League, with both 1sts and 2nds representing the club, we have remained unbeaten. With many more matches to play in this league, the competition will be tough to retain our place in the top 4, but we’re certainly up for the challenge.

One of the highlights of this term has to be the 1sts winning the Scottish Student Sport Tournament, with a nail-bitingly close finale the girls fought to the last few minutes to get a two goal lead against Aberdeen. As a result of their performance many girls were invited to attend the Scottish Universities team trials in January. The 2nds should also be proud of their performance, with a few wins and they even secured a draw against Glasgow 1sts.

As a club we hosted our own mixed lacrosse tournament, ‘Saints Mix it up’, organised by members of the committee with club players helping volunteer on the day. The event was a great success with eight teams entered, including two of our own. The 1sts won their pool, followed by a successful semi-final that took them through to the final, where they ended up runners-up to Edinburgh’s Capital Lacrosse Club.

Ten of our girls attended the National Club Training Day in October, with an extremely high standard of lacrosse for the girls to experience. Four committee members also completed their L2 umpire course and have been busy practising this term. We look forward to the term ahead!
