Dance Club - Semester 1 Report 2016-17
Saturday 28 January 2017
Dance has had a very successful first semester. Aside from adding a ‘Strength and Conditioning’ class to total 22 classes a week, the club has been extremely busy. We have hosted three workshops from industry professionals and well renowned companies including Joan Clevillé, BalletLORENT and Paul and Pamela Distefano covering styles in contemporary, commercial and tricking.
Our competitive team, the Blue Angels competed at Durham Dance Fusion taking all three teams (Advanced, Intermediate and Hip Hop) and returning with eight trophies:
- 1st place - Advanced Tap
- 1st place - Advanced Contemporary
- 2nd place -Advanced Jazz
- 1st place - Intermediate Modern
- 1st place - Intermediate Ballet
- 2nd place - Wildcard - Charmaine Hiller
- Best Male Dancer - Kristian Smith
- Best Choreography - Advanced Contemporary by Mariella Fortune-Ely
Our Christmas showcase, only open to club members, was hugely successful, fun and inclusive, allowing new members to have an opportunity to perform without the pressure of selling tickets. The Blue Angels Winter Showcase took place in the Buchanan Lecture Theatre, featuring Highland Fusion and The Accidentals a cappella group, nearly selling out and demonstrating a semester of hard work. Furthermore, we are increasingly aware of the positive impact dance can have on mental health, and so this past semester we offered completely free classes in association with Wellbeing for Mental Health Awareness Week, and conducted an Improv Jam De-stress in revision week. We’ve also hosted a number of successful socials promoting club unity, including a trip to watch BalletLORENT perform in Dundee. Alongside other Saints Sports teams we took part in ‘Cycletricity’ competing against other clubs to generate the most electricity.
