Cheerleading Club - Semester 1 Report 2016-17
Saturday 28 January 2017
Semester 1 has proven an incredible start to our 2016/17 Season. The semester began with pre-semester training in preparation for a performance at the Royal Bank of Scotland Scottish Varsity Rugby Match at BT Murrayfield stadium. For us, this was an invaluable moment to perform in front of the University community, as well as feeling part of the Saints Sport family and introducing our sport to as many people as possible. We all had an incredible time and hope everyone enjoyed our routine as much as we did performing it.
This year we had our largest give-it-a-go session in Freshers’ Week so far! The weeks leading up to our try-outs were outstanding, with our biggest intake of Freshers and returners learning and refreshing skills in preparation for trying out for the competition team. This year in order to keep up with our exponential growth we will be taking our largest squad to nationals to date, with 28 cheerleaders performing on the main squad and an additional three athletes taking part in group stunt divisions. Furthermore, we continue to perform at the highest level of any Scottish University team, with a main squad at co-ed level 3, and a co-ed group stunt at level 4. We hope that this will prepare us well for the future, taking our stunts higher and with greater difficulty than before.
Preparing for our competitions, the club have begun the fundraising process. In addition to on-going sponsorships from the St Andrews Brewing Company and Sophie Butler Hairdressing, the club have hosted countless bake-sales in order to help alleviate the costs of competing across the country.
Following our receipt of the Volunteer Club of the Year Award last year, the club continues to raise money for charity. This year we’re working alongside the University of St Andrews branch of CoppaFeel, raising awareness of breast cancer as well as helping to fundraise for the charity. Our annual CoppaFeel fundraiser was another success.
Finally, the International Olympic Committee have given cheerleading provisional recognition as an Olympic Sport. We cannot wait to engage in the development of our sport at this top level.
