Judy Murray and Kris Soutar bring 'Tennis on the Road' to St Andrews

On Monday 16th of October the University welcomed Judy Murray and Kris Soutar, to St Andrews as part of their ‘Tennis on the Road’ programme to help train up a tennis workforce, made up of students, local teenagers (tennis leaders) and teachers.

Jack Lynch To Represent Ireland in World U24 Ultimate Championships

Saints Sport and Saints Ultimate are thrilled to announce third year student from Belfast, Jack Lynch, has been selected for the Irish Under 24’s Ultimate team. Jack will now begin training over the coming months to prepare for the 2018 World U24 Ultimate Championships, which will take place in Australia at the beginning of next year.

Archery Club - Semester 1 Report 2016-17

This Semester has been a flying start to the Academic year for Saints Archery, with so much happening that the club has barely had time to stop and pause. Our give-it-a-go sessions in Freshers’ Week were the most successful we have seen for many years with upwards of 100 students attending on one day, and this translated into one of the busiest beginner’s courses we have run and our highest membership rate in memory. Basketball Club - Semester 1 Report 2016-17

With the greatest availability of playing options and the highest level of competition our club has ever been involved in, it has been a semester of expansion and new opportunities for University of St Andrews Basketball Club. Our Women’s 1st Team are now competing at the top level possible in Scotland - in both the BUCS Premier North League and the BasketballScotland Senior Women’s National League – while our Men’s 1st Team are maintaining their status as serious contenders in BUCS Scottish 2A and in the Tayside and Fife Local League. Our newly established Men’s 2nd Team are also making themselves known with their first formal competition in BUCS Scottish 4A this year.‌ Read More...

Boat Club - Semester 1 Report 2016-17

After finishing last year with a strong performance at Henley, the Boat Club has had a productive first semester. We have established a new home at Loch Ore, after moving from Perth at the start of the year. This new location has allowed us reliable training conditions and better facilities. We saw our first and only competition of the semester in November in Aberdeen. Our Men’s 4+ and Novice Women’s 4+ placed first in their respective categories with strong finished from our other crews. Overall, the race showed promise for our upcoming semester of racing. Boxing Club - Semester 1 Report 2016-17

This semester the Boxing Club welcomed a great many new members, many of them quite keen to start sparring. We had a great time meeting our new members, and an even better time training them, with special thanks to our tireless captain for keeping us all fight ready. Semester 1 has proven an incredible start to our 2016/17 Season. The semester began with pre-semester training in preparation for a performance at the Royal Bank of Scotland Scottish Varsity Rugby Match at BT Murrayfield stadium. Cycling Club - Semester 1 Report 2016-17

Semester 1 started a little differently than normal for the Cycling Club as for the first time we were competing in the Varsity competition against Edinburgh. This took the form of a 10-mile team time trial. Our influx of new female members meant it was possible for us to field two female teams and one male team. This year the Fencing Club had a highly successful Sports Fayre showing, leading to an even more successful give-it-a-go session where around sixty interested students attended. Previously, we had been restricted to smaller numbers of interested students due to the lack of space in the gymnasium, but in the new Sports Arena we are only constrained by equipment and storage space. Hockey Club - Semester 1 Report 2016-17

The 2016-17 season kicked off with a week of pre-season training that saw almost 90 students coming back to St Andrews early to take part in various sessions, including pitch sessions, and strength and conditioning. During the week the club also ran a UKCC Level Coaching course that enabled ten members of the club to gain qualifications that would allow them to develop their skills further throughout the year with either Junior Hockey or the University teams. Karate Club - Semester 1 Report 2016-17

Throughout the first couple of weeks of the semester, the Karate Club’s committee sought to generate greater interest in the karate than in previous years. In Freshers’ Week, the committee put up posters advertising the club around St Andrews and distributed fliers to students and locals alike, inviting everyone to our give-it-a-go session. At this semester's Sports Fayre, the committee also encouraged many people to sign up to our emailing list and to attend a taster training session. Kendo Club - Semester 1 Report 2016-17

Upon our official full affiliation to the AU this semester, the Kendo Club has undergone much work in terms of establishing ourselves within the community and laying down most of the groundwork for the club. Besides building links with our coach and other martial arts clubs within the Athletic Union, we have successfully promoted kendo to the student body of St Andrews, and have a reasonable number of new and enthusiastic members that regularly attend training. Korfball Club - Semester 1 Report 2016-17

This semester has been very successful for the Korfball Club. We have around 15 new paid members. In addition, we sent a mixed team of new members and experienced players to the Lancaster Freshers’ tournament and came 6th out of 16 teams. Finally, we hosted Scotland BUCS Prelims at the end of November and our 1st and 2nd teams came 2nd and 5th, respectively. This means both teams will progress to regionals to be held in Lancaster at the end of January. Read more...

It has been a busy term for the Women’s Lacrosse Club. The semester got off to a great start with a strong turnout this year for pre-season, and a productive training schedule to get us fit and ready for the big season ahead. A great effort from the committee to promote the club also saw a huge turnout at the give-it-a-go day and plenty of interest at the Sports Fayre, resulting in the club’s largest number of memberships to date at 85. Netball Club - Semester 1 Report 2016-17

This semester the Netball Club got off to a really strong start, with highly competitive trials in September giving us four incredibly competitive squads and a total membership this year of 84 girls. Our four squads have all had great successes on court, currently placing either first or second in their respective leagues. Under the captaincy of Laura Johnston, our new fourth team have gone from strength to strength, currently leading the BUCS Scottish 7A league by 6 points with a massive 189 goal difference. Riding Club - Semester 1 Report 2016-17

The Riding Club has enjoyed a very successful first semester this year. We started off with a strong turnout for our pre-season training, which welcomed incoming Freshers to 4th year riders. We used this week to improve our riding both on the flat and over jumps, as well as taking part in Pilates and group bonding exercises. Over the course of the semester we held a number of social events for all our members to enjoy, including our opening and Christmas dinners. This has given all our members the opportunity for greater involvement within the club and was a goal we had set for ourselves at the start of the academic year. Read more...

This semester has been a great start to the year for the Sailing Club. The year began with our Freshers’ Week events, give-it-a-go, and our team trials for our dinghy team. The three Dinghy teams this year have been competing in the Scottish Student Sailing League Series and have qualified for the Platinum, Gold, and Silver fleets for our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd teams, respectively. This is an improvement for every team from last year. Our Yachting team participated in the Ceilidh Cup/ Scottish Student Sailing Match Racing Championships and tied for 1st. Read more...

The Swimming Club have had an excellent start to the year, growing from strength to strength. After a large sign up at the Sports Fayre, the club now has over 70 members compared to last year’s 50. The introduction of the Development Squad has played a significant role in accommodating this larger group of swimmers, and provides three sessions a week coached by Eilidh (President), Giselle (Women’s Captain) or Xander (Men’s Captain). Triathlon Club - Semester 1 Report 2016-17

This semester has been an outstanding one for the Triathlon Club. The club has grown significantly, with paid membership already doubled from the last academic year. We continue to train hard with seven sessions per week, four of which are coached by our fantastic coach Ross Whittaker. Water Polo Club - Semester 1 Report 2016-17

Both Men’s and Women’s Water Polo have had a very successful first half of the season. The Men’s Team are top of BUCS Scottish 1A league after an extremely impressive win against Edinburgh 2nds. They came from 7-8 down to win 9-8 in the final minute. They have won all their matches except for a tight away loss against Dundee and are on course for winning the league for a second year in a row. Read more...
