Womens Hockey South Africa Tour Journal: experiences in wine, wildlife, and hockey

Monday 08 July 2013

The St Andrews Hockey Club Women have just returned from an incredible 12 day tour in South Africa! With a squad of 21 girls we started off in Cape town and traveled along the Garden Route to Stellenbosch and George. On our first day we were introduced to South Africa in style with an intense training session, followed by an incredible trip to the top of Table Mountain. Our first competitive match was scheduled that evening at the lovely Hartleyvale stadium. We were eager to win but due to tiredness we lost against Milnerton HC. Before our next games we engaged in a scenic peninsula tour traveling along the Atlantic Ocean to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve and Cape Point. We particularly enjoyed stopping at Boulders Beach to see the African penguins and fur seals on Seal Island. We visited a township and played our second two games against local teams. The first game was against a boys side where we lost 5-3. This was personally one of my favourite experiences and a game that all the girls will never forget. In the second game we created some Saints magic and won our first game of the tour! Alice Taylor scored the winning goal in a fantastic game against Central HC.

We toured the wine region of Stellenbosch (indulging in wine tasting), an ostrich ranch and Robbin Island. We played more competitive matches between our sight seeing and fun activities. It was a pleasure for us to stay at the Goedgedacht Trust which was set up to help support rural children and families. We look part in their after school programme, helping the children with homework, reading and games. We even did some olive picking!

Nearing the end of the tour we travelled to Knysna, stopping along the way for a game drive were we saw spectacular wildlife, including the big 5 and had the chance to hand-feed elephants. The tour ended with fantastic two game finale in George. Winning our first game 2-0 and our second game 6-2 where Kathy Harrison finished off the tour in a fantastic short corner goal! Many thanks to all the girls on tour that made it such an unforgettable experience!
