Research fellowships

BBSRC David Phillips Fellowships

Eligibility: Applicants should not exceed 10 years in active postgraduate research studies and postdoctoral research employment, and no less than 3 years active postdoctoral research experience. See website for further details.

Funding years: 5 years, which includes personal salary and a significant research support grant.

British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowships

Eligibility: Applicants should have completed a PhD degree and are expected to be at an early stage of their academic career. EEA nationals who did not obtain a doctorate from a UK university are eligible. A two-stage assessment procedure is used. See website for further details.

ESRC Future Research Leaders

The Future Research Leaders scheme aims to support outstanding early career researchers to carry out excellent research and to develop all aspects of their research and knowledge exchange skills.

Funding years: 3 years.

Fyssen Foundation

Eligibility: Awarded to either French/Foreign research scientists who have completed a French doctorate (PhD), attached to a laboratory in France and who wish to work in laboratories abroad, or to Foreign/French research scientists who hold a foreign doctorate (PhD), attached to a foreign laboratory and who wish to work in a French laboratory. Applicants should be at an early stage of their academic career and also be under the age of 35 years. The grant will be allocated for one year not renewable, or for two years subject to a satisfactory scientific report at the end of the first year.

Funding years: 1-2 years.

International Brain Research Organization Research Fellowships

Eligibility: IBRO Research Fellowships support post-doctoral training to applicants under the age of 45 for up to one year abroad in good laboratories.  Applicants from the US/Canada region will not be considered.

Funding years: 1 year.

Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships

Eligibility: All candidates must hold a doctorate or have equivalent research experience by the time they take up the Fellowship. Applicants must not yet have held a full-time established academic post in a UK university or comparable UK institution, nor may Fellows hold such a post concurrently with the Early Career Fellowship. Those in receipt of a stipendiary Fellowship may not hold this at the same time as an Early Career Fellowship.

Funding years: 2-3 years.

Marie Curie Fellowships

Eligibility: Applicants must be nationals of an EU Member or Associated State, or have resided in the EU for at least five years immediately prior to their selection. Researchers must have a doctoral degree or at least four years of full-time research experience at postgraduate level other than doctoral studies. At the time of selection the fellow must be 35 years old or less. See website for further details.

Funding years: 1-2 years.

Medical Research Council Fellowships

The MRC provides a number of fellowship opportunities, including Career Development awards and Methodology research fellowships. For more information, see website.

National Science Foundation Fellowships: International Research Fellowship Programme (IRFP)

Eligibility: Applicants should have completed a PhD degree. They must also have proved their ability as independent research workers and show potential as team leaders. See website for further details.

Funding years: 2 years.

NERC Advanced Fellowship

Eligibility: Applicants must have at least two years experience at postdoctoral level, not necessarily in the UK. They must also have proved their ability as independent research workers and show potential as team leaders. See website for further details.

Funding years: Awarded up to 5 years.

Newton Fellowships

Eligibility: Applicants should have completed a PhD degree and held no more than 1 or 2 postdoctoral positions, or equivalent experience at a comparable level. Applicants should be working outside the UK and should not hold UK citizenship at the time of application. Researchers already based in the UK are not eligible to apply. Funding years: 2 years, with the possibility of funding up to £6,000 annually for 10 years following tenure of the fellowship.

Royal Commission of 1851

Eligibility: Applicants must be a citizen of the UK or Commonwealth, or the Republics of Ireland or Pakistan. Candidates must be in possession of a PhD or in the final stages of their PhD studies - these must be completed before the award of a fellowship can be confirmed. A fellowship may be held at any institution at home or abroad approved by the Commissioners. However (1) the research should be carried out at a different institution from the one where the candidate's research was undertaken, and (2) the candidate should either have spent at least two out of the past three years at a UK institution or be intending to hold the fellowship at a UK institution, or both . Royal Society of Edinburgh Personal Research Fellowships

Eligibility: Applicants must have two to six years relevant post-doctoral research experience.  Preference will be given to research likely to enhance the transfer of ideas and technology from the research community into increasing economic growth, and projects must align to one of the Scottish Government's National Outcomes.  The Fellow must spend up to one year working outside of the UK.

Funding years: Up to 5 years.

Royal Society University Research Fellowships

Eligibility: Applicants are expected to be at an early to mid-stage of their career and be either (1) a citizen of the European Economic Area (EEA), ie. European Union, Iceland, Norway or Liechtenstein; or a Swiss citizen, or (2) have a relevant connection to the EEA or Switzerland. See website for further details.

Funding years: Funding is provided initially for 5 years, followed by an extension of 3 years. In exceptional circumstances the Society can consider a further extension taking the fellowship to a maximum of 10 years.

Wellcome Trust Research Fellowships

The Wellcome Trust provides a number of fellowship opportunities, including Henry Wellcome fellowships and Career Development awards. For more information, see website.

Women in Science (Royal Institution / L'Oréal - UK and Ireland Fellowships)

Eligibility: Applicants must be female postdoctoral researchers with no more than 10 years active postdoctoral experience. Candidates must not currently hold a permanent academic post, or have held a permanent academic post in the past, or have received before the start date of the award, the promise of an academic post. Candidates must be a citizen of the European Economic Area (EEA), or a Swiss citizen, or have permanent residence status in the UK or Ireland. See website for further details.
