Photographic work

Photographic databases available

We hold approximately 8,000 current images of the University and town. The photographs, which are regularly updated, are taken by the Photographic Assistant and also by freelance photographers. An online imagebank of all our photographs is available at:

We hold a large variety of photographs that may not have been uploaded to the imagebank, therefore please email if you are requiring specific photographs that you are unable to find in the imgebank.

All photographs are available for use by staff and students in any publicity material, for example in prospectuses, leaflets, magazines, posters and on web pages. External enquirers and the media are also welcome to request photographs however there may be a charge for commercial publications.

Please contact us for more information or email:

Special collections

We maintain close links with Special Collections in the University. Their Photographic Library is an extensive historic photographic archive of pictures taken before 2007. Our photographs from the imagebank are archived to the Special Collections database approximately every ten years.

Photographic production processes

We offer a high end scanning service for documents, photographs and artwork as well as photographic film of all formats, including glass plate negatives and prints up to 16 x 12 inches (40.5 x 30.5cm) in black and white or colour.

We have to capacity to scan items such as documents, photographs and artwork, up to A3 size, however larger items could be accommodated - please contact us for more information.

Image modification

Our photographic technicians can also tackle any discipline which has an imaging application. They work with virtually anything that can be scanned up to 16 × 12 inches (40.5 × 30.5cm).

We have expertise in image modification of any kind of imaging application but these are primarily historic photographic prints. The photographs are scanned at high resolution and then detailed and skilled digital repair is carried out on the damaged photographs.

Original version

Repaired version

The photos are then saved as digital images but many of our customers request our high-end photographic prints on specialist media e.g. fine art paper, textured materials, for example canvas and on premium digital papers. The prints can be at any size up to A0 posters.

This work is carried out for a number of academic Schools and Units, in particular Art History and the University Library but any enquiry is welcome.

The District Museums Service are also important clients.

Personal enquiries are always welcome both within and outside the University.
