PhD Studentships

PhD & EngD Application Routes

We have several different application schemes through which the School allocates doctoral studentship places. You can APPLY HERE for a PhD place in all research areas (astronomy, photonics, condensed matter physics)

International applicants may also wish to apply for funding from the SUPA prize studentship scheme. The deadline for such applications is the end of January.

There are also discipline-specific studentships through three Doctoral Training Centres:

Scholarships are available for PhD study in all research areas in the School: photonics, condensed matter physics and astrophysics. These fully funded PhD scholarships usually start in September, but some may be available immediately. Studentships are funded by EPSRC, STFC, SUPA, the European Commission and other bodies, and commonly last for 3.5 years.

For applications in astronomy, we strongly encourage applications before February 1st, with interviews being held in late February and early March. Applications that arrive after this date may also be considered until positions are filled.

Current PhD projects available in the School:

 PhD in Photonics
 PhD in Condensed Matter
 PhD in Astrophysics

All our PhD students are trained within the SUPA Graduate School, which provides advanced courses to support their research studies. The University Postgraduate Brochure gives an overview of research areas, funding routes and life as a postgraduate research student in St Andrews. Information for PhD funding is available here.
