Santa Transit

Part of the research at St Andrews on extra-solar planets involves careful simulations of how much a star would dim as its planet passes between us and the star. All we can see is the dimming of the light from the star, as it is not possible to create an image of planet and star at such a distance. Research student Joe Llama took the computer code that he had developed and got it to do the calculations of how much a star would dim if Santa and his reindeer passed in front of a star! The result is now on YouTube and featured in the latest edition of the staff newsletter.
