St Leonard’s Languages

St Leonard’s Postgraduate College is pleased to offer several part-funded places on the University’s evening language courses. These places are for doctoral students who want to learn another language as part of their broader personal and professional development.

Evening language courses are available at all levels of language competency, from beginners to advanced learners. It is expected that classes in the following languages will be available (subject to change):

  • Arabic
  • Chinese (Mandarin)
  • French
  • Gaelic
  • German
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Latin
  • Spanish
  • Ukrainian

Please see the evening languages courses website for more information about course content, levels and timetables.

Each evening language course (ten lessons) costs £130 (2023-2024). Students who are awarded a funded place will receive a payment of £100 from the College for part payment of the fees.  However, please note that students may also need to purchase an associated textbook.

Eligibility

Applications are invited from University of St Andrews students in the second year or above of a doctoral degree programme. We are unable to accept applications from students on research Masters degrees (MPhil, MRes, etc.) or on doctoral degrees awarded jointly with another institution.

Doctoral students awarded a funded place for one course may subsequently apply for a funded place on a second course. For example, if they complete the beginners course and want to go on to the elementary course. No more than two funded places will be awarded to any student and they may not be taken concurrently.

Applications

Applications open before the start of each semester. The selection process for 2023-2024 Semester 2 has now been completed. If you are interested in taking a course in 2024-2025, please check here in August 2024.

Conditions

Doctoral students awarded one of the funded places will be expected to attend all lessons. Students who fail to attend at least seven lessons may be required to re-pay the full value of the funded place (£100).

If you are aware that in the foreseeable future your workload will increase please take this into consideration before applying. Please discuss this with your supervisor.
