Institutional standards and awards

OSDS either lead on or are contributors to a number of external standards and awards.



Athena Swan

The University successfully renewed the Institutional Athena SWAN Bronze Award on 7 May 2018.

HR Excellence in Research

The University of St Andrews was awarded the European Commission HR Excellence in Research award in May 2012 and has since successfully retained the award by completing a 2-year internal review (2014) and a 4-year external review (2016).  The 6 year internal review was submitted to Vitae in May 2018 and the award was successfully retained under the condition that SMART objectives were added to our new and ongoing action plan, and that these were separated from our completed actions for clarity. The updated documents were approved by Vitae in October 2018. We now look forward to the 8 year, external review in 2020.


Aurora is an external women-only leadership development programme. It is a unique partnership initiative bringing together leadership experts and higher education institutions to take positive action to address the under-representation of women in leadership positions in the sector.


Healthy Working Lives

The University of St Andrews has been recognised as an example of good practice for our health and wellbeing programmes. Healthy Working Lives is an initiative designed to increase the health and wellbeing of employees across Scotland. Organisations are encouraged to work towards three levels of Healthy Working Lives awards; bronze, silver and gold.  We retained our Silver Award in November 2017 and have achieved the Gold Award.
