Scholarship Ensembles

A number of scholarships are awarded each year for students who form the Music Centre's flagship ensembles: a number of string quartets, a saxophone quartet, a wind quintet and a brass ensemble.

As a result of a generous bequest from the estate of Hetty Buchanan, a cellist who was deeply involved in music in St Andrews throughout her life, we are able to offer four scholarships to string players who form the Music Centre's Hetty Buchanan String Quartet.  We also award scholarships to the McPherson Quartet and the Cedric Thorpe Davie Quartet.  Each student receives individual tuition, regular coaching as part of the quartet from Feargus Hetherington and occasional coaching from Lucy Russell of the Fitzwilliam String Quartet.

Each member of the scholarship ensembles receives free individual tuition, plus regular coaching by a specialist: the saxophone quartet is coached by Ellie Steemson, the wind quintet by Marie Downes, and the brass ensemble by Bede Williams.  Masterclasses and coaching from visiting musicians, including members of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, are also offered on occasion.

Each ensemble rehearses regularly between coaching sessions and performs at University events.

Please contact Michael Downes for more information.  Auditions for these ensembles take during Week 1 of the first semester in September.
