Royal Connections

St Andrews alumnus Prince William, accompanied by fiancée and alumna Miss Catherine Middleton, returned to the University of St Andrews to launch its 600th anniversary on 25 February 2011.

The official visit was Prince William’s first as Patron of the 600th Anniversary Appeal and the couple’s first official engagement in Scotland.

Prince William and Miss Middleton met when they were both studying at the University, in 2001.

As part of their visit in March, we were delighted to welcome the couple to MUSA, where they were greeted and shown round by Director of Museums, Professor Ian Carradice. They viewed the Papal Bull, the University’s founding document, which is normally housed in the Special Collections department of the University Library. They also visited Gallery Two, where they viewed some of the collections relating to University life through the ages, and played the Silver Arrow Competition archery game!

The University presented Prince William and Miss Middleton with their first wedding gift during the 600th anniversary launch – a scholarship, in their name, which will be presented annually to gifted students who would otherwise be unable to attend University.
