Dr Claudia Paz y Paz (Attorney General of Guatemala)
‘The Trial of General Efraín Rios Montt’
Recently nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by the Director of the Oslo based Peace Research Institute, Dr Kristian Berg Harpviken, Dr Claudia Paz y Paz has come to international prominence for the role she has played in building the case against former Guatemalan president, Efraín Ríos Montt, accused of crimes against humanity, genocide, and sexual violence. As Guatemala’s first female Attorney General, she is a renowned criminal law authority and judge who has courageously brought justice to organised crime bosses, human rights abusers, and perpetrators of gender-based violence, having succeed in dramatically increasing the number of prosecutions and convictions in Guatemala since assuming office in 2010. She has a Doctorate in Law from the University of Salamanca. She is also the founder of the human rights organisation, the Institute for Comparative Criminal Studies of Guatemala (ICCPG).
