Research and Teaching

My main research interest is in Dante, in particular the Commedia, and issues around the moral structure of the Inferno and  the composition of the poem. I am also interested in Italian detective fiction.

In 2009 I started the Lectura Dantis Andreapolitana in collaboration with Claudia Rossignoli. This is a very exciting and ambitious project which brings experts in Dante from all over the UK and abroad to St Andrews to deliver lectures on the Divine Comedy which are open to the public. So far we have completed the Inferno and Purgatorio, and have just begun the series of lectures on the Paradiso. The lectures are recorded on video, and are available on the LDA website. For more information visit:

I have taught undergraduate modules on Italian literature from the 13th, 14th, 16th, 19th and 20th centuries, as well as Translation Methodology, and supervised dissertations on a variety of topics ranging from Boccaccio to the mafia. I have taught on Italian texts in translation on Comparative Literature modules. I also teach on the Postgraduate programme of the St Andrews Institute of Mediaeval Studies (
