Full research profile

Research and Teaching

My research focuses on 20th-century Italian Poetry and Prose, with a special interest in Italian Modernism, and contemporary Italian cinema. In particular I have closely analysed the poetry of Eugenio Montale (1896-1981), the poetry and novels by Cesare Pavese (1908-1950) and the cinema of Nanni Moretti (1953).

I also research the dialogue between the Humanities and the Sciences, in particular in connection with the conception and development of the Modern Welfare State. I am studying this with a small International Network with a focus on Italian contemporary poetry and cinema. As a consequence, I have also recently become interested in researching the origins of the concept of human rights (healthcare, education, social services) in the modern democratic state and I am thus exploring the philosophy of Enlightenment and its limitations, and the literary-philosophical debates in 18th century Europe in particular the mutual influences between Italy (Florence, Milan and Venice) and France. I am currently supervising a PhD student who is working on an example of a proto-welfare project for free education for all girls (irrespective of their social class) in Milan in the 1790s, and another PhD student who is researching the phenomenological body in contemporary Italian poets of the 1960s.

Currently I am working on an impact project in Medical Humanities 'Poetry and Film in Palliative Care' in conjunction with St Columba's Hospice (Edinburgh) and Marie Curie Hospice (Edinburgh) where I research the effects of reading/watching and discussing poetry and film in Palliative Care. I am particularly interested in studying the space of the Hospice as a 'place of life' through the lens of participatory health care and narrative theories to help destabilise the demarcation line between the well and the sick, and the construction of normativity. I am very interested in the application of the idiom of modern therapy to my research in literature and film.

In 2010 I published 'Pier Vittorio Tondelli between Europe and Emilia: Centre and Margins in Camere separate' in R.M. Riccobono (ed.) The Poetics of the Margins: Mapping Europe from the Interstices (Oxford: Peter Lang), p. 55-71 (Cultural Identity Studies; vol. 23). My latest published article is 'Il filo di Arianna. The Healing Value of Nanni Moretti's Cinema of Poetry', Spunti e ricerche, 30, 2015: 23-40.

I have recently completed an article on the poetry of A. Anedda and the empowerment of the self through storytelling after the experience of trauma - the article is entitled 'Voice, Storytelling and Agency in Antonella Anedda’s ‘Residenze invernali’ (1989)'. I am currently working on a monograph, Re-Orienting the Gaze and Re-Politicising the Space. Illness, Voice and the Narratable Self in Six Contemporary Italian and English Poets. All of the above research outputs are underpinning my current project with impact on society 'Poetry and Film in Palliative Care'.

Riccobono WindowMy edited volume A Window on The Italian Female Modernist Subjectivity was published in 2013. And a new book chapter on 'Cesare Pavese e la crisi del narratore moderno' is about to be published by Morlacchi, Perugia.

I teach in most of the areas in which I actively research (Venetian Literature between 18th and 20th century, contemporary cinema, Montale and Pavese). I have also created a new honours module in Comparative Literature titled 'Science and Culture in European Modernisms'.

PhD Supervision

I am interested in supervising doctoral theses on the following topics: Italian Modernist and Contemporary poetry and prose; Early and contemporary Italian cinema; Medical Humanities; the dialogue between the sciences and the humanities (from Italian Enlightenment onwards, in particular Enlightened Milan, Florence and Venice) and the development of the concept of the Italian/European Welfare State.

Current PhD students: Cecilia Ascoli, Margherita Carlotti.
