Research and Teaching

My research focuses mainly on modern Italian literature and film with a particular emphasis on issues of sexuality, gender, and colonial/postcolonial Italy. I am particularly interested in texts which explore the intersection of identities grounded in constructions of sexuality/gender and of race/ethnicity. I draw extensively on Queer Theory and Postcolonial Theory and explore the issues of transcultural interpretation they raise when they move into the Italian context. I have become increasingly interested in exploring Italian cultural as a set of vernacular global practices extending far beyond the peninsula itself. My teaching reflects these interests I offer modules on topics such as Black Italians, and Italian Emigration.

My current project is a book on cinema dealing with migration to Italy, provisionally titled Postcolonial Italian Cinema: Entanglements, and I'm also co-editing Transnational Modern Languages: A Handbook (LUP), essays written for undergraduates exploring key aspects of Modern Languages from a cross-cultural perspective.

I was founding Senior Editor of the Cultural Studies issue of the long-established journal Italian Studies, and am an Editor of two new book series with Liverpool University Press:

Transnational Italian Cultures

Transnational Modern Languages

From 2014-18 I was one of the lead investigators on the large AHRC funded project "Transnationalizing Modern Languages: Mobility Identity and Translation in Modern Italian Cultures" and its follow-on Global Challenges project in Namibia (http://www.transnationalmodernlanguages.ac.uk). Both projects explored questions of linguistic and cultural translation in multilingual contexts, and raised issues around the representation of personal and collective identities which straddle different language and cultural spheres. One of the project outputs was a major digital exhibition which was staged in Rome and in London. As a result of that experience, I have become increasingly engaged by the field of Creative Humanities and the link between creative practice and academic research. This interest was stimulated by the work I did with Drummond CHS and Castlebrae CHS in Edinburgh bringing language and cultural translation into new curriculum areas. This short video introduces what we’ve been doing and the people involved.
