Research and Teaching

My research explores the flexible relationship between identity and space in modern and contemporary literature, and particularly how corporeal and other extra-linguistic forms of expression are represented in current trans-national, migration and border writings. I have co-edited two volumes in this area: Destination Italy: Representing Migration in Contemporary Media and Narrative, and Il confine liquido, the first comprehensive study of Italian-Albanian cultural and literary relations. I am currently completing my second monograph, Trans-scripts, on the topic of migration, embodiment and culture.

I have also worked extensively on Italo Svevo, the literature of Trieste, and both Freudian and post-Freudian psychoanalytic literary theory. Within this field I have co-edited the volume Freud and Italian Culture, and published the monograph Disrupted Narratives: Illness, Silence and Identity in Svevo, Pressburger and Morandini. Other areas of interest include 20th and 21st century women’s writing (especially the work of Goliarda Sapienza, on whom I co-edited the first critical study in English), and mapping the legacies of Italian colonialism in contemporary diasporic literature.

I am co-editor of the Transnational Italian Cultures series (Liverpool University Press) and Section Editor for Comparative Literature for Modern Languages Open.

I teach at all levels for the Italian and Comparative Literature departments, and co-ordinate Honours modules on: ‘Migration and Transculturality in New Italian Narratives’, ‘The Twentieth-Century Italian Novel’, ‘Found in Translation’, and ‘Illness and Literature’.

I welcome enquiries from postgraduate students on all aspects of modern and contemporary Italian and Comparative Literature, especially women’s writing, body studies, and trans-national, migration and border narratives.
