Research and Teaching

I am primarily interested in the transnational circulation of people, texts, and – increasingly – of objects and cultural artifacts. I have published widely on contemporary migration, including two co-edited volumes: Destination Italy: Representing Migration in Contemporary Media and Narrative, and Il confine liquido, the first comprehensive study of Italian-Albanian cultural and literary relations. I am also interested in mapping the memories and legacies of Italian colonialism in the Horn of Africa in contemporary diasporic literature.

My new monograph, Writing Migration through the Body (2018), builds a study of the body as a mutable site for negotiating and articulating the transnational experience of mobility. At its core stands a selection of recent migration stories in Italian, placed into dialogue with related material from cultural studies and the visual arts. Drawing on phenomenology, anthropology, human geography and memory studies, it explores the ways in which the skin itself operates as a border, and brings to the surface the processes by which a sense of place and self are communicated through the migrant body.

My interest in the transnational movement of objects has developed through an interdisciplinary impact project around Scotland’s role in the transatlantic sugar trade, in collaboration with the McLean Museum in Greenock. More information about this project is available here.

I have also worked extensively on Italo Svevo, the literature of Trieste, and psychoanalytic literary theory. Within this field I published my first monograph Disrupted Narratives: Illness, Silence and Identity in Svevo, Pressburger and Morandini(2012) and co-edited the volume Freud and Italian Culture (2009).

I am co-editor of the Transnational Italian Cultures series (Liverpool University Press) and Section Editor for Comparative Literature for Modern Languages Open.

In my role as Deputy Director of the Graduate School, I am on full secondment from the School of Modern Languages 2018-2021 and will not be offering undergraduate teaching during this period.

I continue to welcome enquiries from postgraduate students on all aspects of modern and contemporary Italian and Comparative Literature, especially material culture, body studies, and migration, transnational and border narratives.
