Research and Teaching

I first became fascinated by German literature and culture while working in the malting industry in Ireland and Scotland. A spell at the Technical University of Munich convinced me that I was more interested in philology than in fermentation, and I decided to retrain as a Germanist. I read German, Dutch and Swedish at Trinity College Dublin and stayed on to research the wanderer motif in nineteenth-century German writing.

As a researcher I am mainly interested in the German literature of the ‘long’ nineteenth century, that is, the period stretching roughly from 1789 to 1918. My interest in the wanderer motif allowed me to explore a wide range of connections between such diverse areas of nineteenth-century knowledge as aesthetics, anthropology, education, politics and social thinking. I welcome enquiries from prospective postgraduates interested in pursuing research in these areas.

Another recurring theme in my research is forgotten or neglected writers. This prompted me to take a look at the place of the Gothic novel or Schauerroman in the German literary canon with Barry Murnane. I am also drawn to writers like the cultural historian, Johannes Scherr, once highly successful, and now almost unknown, even to specialists. These interests in perceptions of marginality and in the literary canon also inform my honours teaching on Women in German Letters and Travel Writing in German.

Since coming to St Andrews in 2012 I have supervised a dozen MLitt dissertations and acted as examiner on two PhDs, one at St Andrews and one at the University of Exeter.

The above photo was taken on an excursion to Loch Leven during the conference Der Fontane-Ton: Stil im Werk Theodor Fontanes which I organized with Michael White in June 2017.
