Research and Teaching

My research is in the area of postcolonial literatures in French, particularly fiction from sub-Saharan Africa. My past research has focused strongly on African women’s writing and migrant fiction. I am currently working on two projects about the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. The first analyses fictional responses to the genocide. One of the outputs of this project has been a book entitled Rwanda Genocide Stories: Fiction After 1994. The research for this book was funded by a 12-month Research Fellowship from the Leverhulme Trust.

Since 2015, I have been leading the project, Rwandan Stories of Change, which analyses post-traumatic growth in testimonies from survivors and perpetrators of the genocide. Funded by a 39-month AHRC Research Grant, this project investigates the ways in which individual Rwandan people have adjusted and reconstructed their identity in the years since the genocide. The project is a collaboration between the Department of French at the University of St Andrews, the School of Education at the University of Nottingham, the Aegis Trust, and the Genocide Archive of Rwanda. Two co-edited volumes from this project are currently in preparation for publication in 2019: Rwanda Since 1994: Stories of Change (Liverpool University Press) and After the Genocide in Rwanda: Stories of Violence, Change and Reconciliation (I. B. Tauris).

In 2018, I was nominated for the inaugural 2018 Wellcome Trust/AHRC Health Humanities Medal in the category of Best International Research.

I have supervised 12 research degrees to successful completion on various aspects of postcolonial francophone studies, including African philosophy and women’s documentary cinema, as well as various topics on African literature in French. I warmly welcome enquiries from students interested in this area.
