Research and Teaching

My research interests were focused on C17th French literature, especially the theatre, and the French theatre across the centuries.

In 2013, I published with Droz (Geneva) a two volume critical edition of Paul Scarron’s complete theatre.

My specialised teaching interests reflect my former research interests. At Honours level I coordinate an introductory module on C17th French literature in general, and also run two more specialized modules concentrating on C17th French theatre from a variety of perspectives. The latter also have specific goals in teaching students research skills.

I am joint coordinator of an Honours course on French C19th theatre, on which I focus on the Romantic period.

I lecture on Molière at First Level and Corneille and Beaumarchais at second level.

I teach, and have taught, French language at all levels, having coordinated both the first level and Senior Honours courses.

I coordinate the first semester Civilisation module at second level covering the period from the High Middle Ages to the Enlightenment, and the eve of the French Revolution. I contribute to this with lectures and seminars on the rise of the absolute monarchy in France.

I contribute to Comparative Literature at sub-Honours and Honours levels with lectures on modern French theatre (Ionesco) and the translation and modernisation by Angela Carter of the C17th author Charles Perrault’s Contes.

I am the School’s representative on the Interdisciplinary course ID4002, Communication and Teaching in the Arts and Humanities, which serves as an important outreach activity in the local community.

I am on the committee of the University Council for Modern Languages (Scotland), and coordinate further outreach activities in conjunction with the Scottish Centre for Innovation in Language Teaching.
