Orientation week 2018

Welcome (or welcome back) to all our Undergraduate students.

This page contains information about Orientation Week events, including formal classes, taking place in the School of Mathematics and Statistics.

Advising for new entrants

Advising for new entrants will occur on Tuesday 11 September and Wednesday 12 September: you can find out who your Adviser is using MySaint.  The Subhonours Advisers and their venue for advising are as follows:

Sign up for an allocated time with your Adviser using MMS (the link to MMS will become active on Friday 7 September).

For written guidance on second year (2000-level) module choices please refer to our Programme pages.

Please note: you must attend the advising if at all possible. If for some unforeseen reason you can not attend advising you must email your advisor as soon as it is practical to explain and re-arrange.

Advising for returning students

Advising for returning students will occur between Monday 10 September and Wednesday 12 September (inclusive). 

For second-year students in subhonours,  advising will be on Wednesday 12 September, with one of the following:

Orientation events for new entrants

  1. Tuesday 11 September, 9amAdvising Information Session (Mathematical Institute, Lecture Theatre D), delivered by Dr Sophie Huczynska (Advising coordinator). This session is aimed at all new undergraduate students in the School.
  2. Tuesday 11 September, 11amCoffee & Cakes (Mathematical Institute, Room 1A). A chance for new entrants taking a single or joint Honours degree in Mathematics or Statistics to meet the staff who will be teaching you during your time in St Andrews.
  3. Thursday 13 September, 9amInduction Session for 1000-level MT modules (PDF, 544 KB) (Purdie Building, Lecture Theatre A). Information for all students taking primarily 1000-level MT modules, delivered by Dr Antonia Wilmot-Smith (Director of Teaching). Most new entrant students should attend this session, excepting those doing direct 2000-level entry or those enrolled on the Fast Track MMath degree, who should attend the 2000-level induction. For students who are unable to attend this session it will be repeated at 2pm in the Mathematical Institute, Lecture Theatre B.
  4. Thursday 13 September, 10am: Induction Session for 2000-level MT modules (PDF, 564 KB) (Purdie Building, Lecture Theatre A). Information for all students taking primarily 2000-level MT modules, delivered by Dr Antonia Wilmot-Smith (Director of Teaching). New entrants following direct 2000-level entry or enrolled on the Fast Track MMath degree should attend this session. For students who are unable to attend this session it will be repeated at 11am in the Mathematical Institute, Lecture Theatre B.
  5. Friday 14th September, 2pm: Welcome Event for all Undergraduates (Mathematical Institute, Tutorial Room 1A). A chance for all students taking a single or joint Honours degree in Mathematics and Statistics to meet and share cake and refreshments.

Orientation events for returning students

  1. Thursday 13th September, 10amInduction Session for 2000-level MT modules (PDF, 564 KB) (Purdie Building, Lecture Theatre A). Information for all students taking primarily 2000-level MT modules, delivered by Dr Antonia Wilmot-Smith (Director of Teaching).  The session is repeated at 11am in the Mathematical Institute, Lecture Theatre B.
  2. Friday 14th September, 10am: Induction Session for Junior Honours in Mathematics and Statistics (PDF, 1,198 KB)(Mathematical Institute, Lecture Theatre D).  Information for all students newly entered into the Honours programme, delivered by Dr Antonia Wilmot-Smith (Director of Teaching).
  3. Friday 14th September, 11amInduction Session for Final-Year Students in Maths and Statistics (PDF, 1,172 KB) (Mathematical Institute, Lecture Theatre D).  Information for final-year students in the School delivered by Dr Antonia Wilmot-Smith (Director of Teaching). Includes Final Year Careers Introduction (PDF, 4,935 KB).
  4. Friday 14th September, 2pm: Welcome Event for all Undergraduates (Mathematical Institute, Tutorial Room 1A). A chance for all students taking a single or joint Honours degree in Mathematics and Statistics to meet and share cake and refreshments.


Careers and Internship Options in Mathematics and Statistics will also be covered as part of the Induction Session for Final-Year Students in Maths and Statistics by Delia Belelli of the Careers Service while a staff member from the Centre for Academic, Professional and Organisational Development (CAPOD) will also contribute to the induction talks to convey what they can offer new and returning students.



 

Computing workshop for students on 2000-level MT modules

An introduction to the use of computing in Mathematics and Statistics for students registered on 2000-level MT modules will also take place during Orientation Week.  Students on 2000-level MT modules should attend one of the following sessions, which take place in the Mathematical Institute Computer Classroom (Microlab):

  • Thursday 13th September, 2pm-3pm
  • Thursday 13th September, 3pm-4pm
  • Friday 14th September, 10am-11am
  • Friday 14th September, 11am-12noon
  • Friday 14th September, 2pm-3pm

(The five sessions above contain the same material)

This workshop, in the Python language, is compulsory for all students taking any of the modules MT2503-MT2508.
