Orientation week 2015

This page contains information about Orientation Week events taking place in the School of Mathematics and Statistics.

Advising for new entrants

Advising for new entrants will occur on Tuesday 8th September and Wednesday 9th September: you can find out who your Adviser is using iSaint and advising will take place in the Mathematical Institute.  The Subhonours Advisers in the School of Mathematics and Statistics are:

 Sign up for an allocated time with your Adviser using MMS (the link to MMS will become active on Friday 5th September).

Please note: you must attend the advising if at all possible. If for some unforeseen reason you can not attend advising you must email your advisor as soon as it is practical to explain and re-arrange.

Advising for returning students

Advising for returning students will occur between Monday 7th and Wednesday 9th September (inclusive) in the Mathematical Institute. 

For second-year students in subhonours: Advising will be on Wednesday 9th September, with one of:

For honours students: Advising will be between Monday 7th September and Wednesday 9th September, with one of:

  1. Tuesday 8th September, 9amAdvising Information Session (Mathematical Institute, Lecture Theatre C), delivered by Dr. Sophie Huczynska (Advising coordinator).
  2. Tuesday 8th September, 11amCoffee & Cakes (Mathematical Institute, Room 1A). A chance for new entrants taking a single or joint Honours degree in Mathematics or Statistics to meet the staff who will be teaching you during your time in St Andrews.
  3. Thursday 10th September, 9amInduction Session for 2000-level MT modules (Physics Building, Lecture Theatre A). Information for all students taking primarily 2000-level MT modules, delivered by Dr Monique Mackenzie (Director of Teaching). [New entrants following direct 2000-level entry or enrolled on the Fast Track MMath degree should attend this session.]
  4. Thursday 10th September, 11amInduction Session for 1000-level MT modules (Physics Building, Lecture Theatre A). Information for all students taking primarily 1000-level MT modules, delivered by Dr Monique Mackenzie (Director of Teaching). [Most new entrant students should attend this session, but not those doing direct 2000-level entry or those enrolled on the Fast Track MMath degree.]

Orientation events for returning students

  1. Thursday 10th September, 9amInduction Session for 2000-level MT modules (Physics Building, Lecture Theatre A). Information for all students taking primarily 2000-level MT modules, delivered by Dr Monique Mackenzie (Director of Teaching).  [New entrants following direct 2000-level entry or enrolled on the Fast Track MMath degree should attend also this session].
  2. Friday 11th September, 12 noon: Induction Session for Junior Honours in Mathematics and Statistics (Physics Building, Lecture Theatre A).  Information for all students newly entered into the Honours programme, delivered by Dr Monique Mackenzie (Director of Teaching).
  3. Friday 11th September, 11am: Induction Session for Final-Year Students in Maths and Statistics (Mathematical Institute, Lecture Theatre C).  Information for final-year students in the School, primarily focused on the Honours project(s), delivered by Prof Clare Parnell (Senior Honours Projects Convener).


Careers and Internship Options in Mathematics and Statistics will also be covered as part of the Induction Session for Final-Year Students in Maths and Statistics by Dr Ben Carter of the Careers Service while Catriona Wilson from the Centre for Academic, Professional and Organisational Development (CAPOD) will also contribute to the induction talks to convey what they can offer new and returning students.



 

Computing workshop for students on 2000-level MT modules

An introduction to the use of computing in Mathematics and Statistics for students registered on 2000-level MT modules will also take place during Orientation Week.  Students on 2000-level MT modules should attend one of the following sessions, which take place in the Mathematical Institute Computer Classroom (Microlab):

  • Thursday 10th September, 10am-11am
  • Thursday 10th September, 11am-12noon
  • Friday 11th September, 10am-11am
  • Friday 11th September, 11am-12noon

(The four sessions above contain the same material)

This workshop is compulsory for all students enrolled on a Mathematics or Statistics degree and taking level 2000 MT modules or for any student taking 30 credits or more of MT modules at level 2000 in a semester. Conversely, the workshop is optional for students taking a single level 2000  module in a semester.

Information for all students taking primarily 1000-level MT modules, delivered by Dr Monique Mackenzie (Director of Teaching). [Most new entrant students should attend this session, but not those doing direct 2000-level entry or those enrolled on the Fast Track MMath degree.]

Computing workshop for students on 2000-level MT modules

An introduction to the use of computing in Mathematics and Statistics for students registered on 2000-level MT modules will also take place during Orientation Week.  Students on 2000-level MT modules should attend one of the following sessions, which take place in the Mathematical Institute Computer Classroom:

  • Thursday 8th September, 3pm-4pm
  • Friday 9th September, 10am-11am
  • Friday 9th September, 11am-12noon
  • Friday 9th September, 2pm-3pm

(The five sessions above contain the same material and comprise the first of 6 sessions.)

This workshop is compulsory for all students enrolled on a Mathematics or Statistics degree and taking level 2000 MT modules or for any student taking 30 credits or more of MT modules at level 2000 in a semester. Conversely, the workshop is optional for students taking a single level 2000  module in a semester.
