Orientation week 2017

This page contains information about Orientation Week events, including formal classes, taking place in the School of Mathematics and Statistics.

Information about other events in the University can be found on the main University Orientation webpage or via the Orientation App.

Advising for new entrants

Advising for new entrants will occur on Tuesday 12th September and Wednesday 13th September: you can find out who your Adviser is using iSaint.  The Subhonours Advisers and their venue for advising will be as follows:

Advisor Room Building
Dr S Huczynska 312 Mathematical Institute
Dr J Fraser 327 Mathematical Institute
Dr A P Naughton Basement Gateway Building
Prof L Thomas 315 Mathematical Institute

Sign up for an allocated time with your Adviser using MMS (the link to MMS will become active on Friday 8th September).

Please note: you must attend the advising if at all possible. If for some unforeseen reason you can not attend advising you must email your advisor as soon as it is practical to explain and re-arrange.

Advising for returning students

Advising for returning students will occur between Monday 11th and Wednesday 13th September (inclusive).

For second-year students in subhonours: Advising will be on Wednesday 13th September, with one of the following:

Advisor Room Building
Dr S Huczynska 312 Mathematical Institute
Dr J Fraser 327 Mathematical Institute
Dr A P Naughton Basement Gateway Building
Prof L Thomas 315 Mathematical Institute

For honours students: Advising will be between Monday 7th September and Wednesday 9th September, with one of the following:

Advisor Room Building
Dr Collin Bleak 209 Mathematical Institute
Prof Steve Buckland 309 Mathematical Institute
Prof David Dritschel 302 Mathematical Institute
Dr Richard Scott 206 Mathematical Institute
Dr Mike Todd 320 Mathematical Institute
Dr Chuong Tran 306 Mathematical Institute
Dr Andy Wright 212 Mathematical Institute

Sign up for an allocated time with your Adviser using MMS (the link to MMS will become active on Friday 5th September at 12 noon).

Please note: you must attend the advising if at all possible. If for some unforeseen reason you can not attend advising you must email your advisor as soon as it is practical to explain and re-arrange.

Orientation events for new entrants

  1. Tuesday 12th September, 9amAdvising Information Session (Mathematical Institute, Lecture Theatre D), delivered by Dr Sophie Huczynska (Advising coordinator).
  2. Tuesday 12th September, 11amCoffee & Cakes (Mathematical Institute, Room 1A). A chance for new entrants taking a single or joint Honours degree in Mathematics or Statistics to meet the staff who will be teaching you during your time in St Andrews.
  3. Thursday 14th September, 9amInduction Session for 1000-level MT modules (PDF, 542 KB) (Purdie Building, Lecture Theatre A). Information for all students taking primarily 1000-level MT modules, delivered by Dr Antonia Wilmot-Smith (Director of Teaching). [Most new entrant students should attend this session, but not those doing direct 2000-level entry or those enrolled on the Fast Track MMath degree.] For students who are unable to attedn this session it will be repeated at 2pm in the Mathematical Institute, Lecture Theatre B.
  4. Thursday 14th September, 10amInduction Session for 2000-level MT modules (PDF, 560 KB) (Purdie Building, Lecture Theatre A). Information for all students taking primarily 2000-level MT modules, delivered by Dr Antonia Wilmot-Smith (Director of Teaching). [New entrants following direct 2000-level entry or enrolled on the Fast Track MMath degree should attend this session.] For students who are unable to attend this session it will be repeated at 11am in the Mathematical Institute, Lecture Theatre B.

Orientation events for returning students

  1. Thursday 14th September, 10amInduction Session for 2000-level MT modules (Purdie Building, Lecture Theatre A). Information for all students taking primarily 2000-level MT modules, delivered by Dr Antonia Wilmot-Smith (Director of Teaching).
  2. Friday 15th September, 10am: Induction Session for Junior Honours in Mathematics and Statistics (Mathematical Institute, Lecture Theatre D).  Information for all students newly entered into the Honours programme, delivered by Dr Martyn Quick (Head of Pure Mathematics).
  3. Friday 15th September, 11am: Induction Session for Final-Year Students in Maths and Statistics (Mathematical Institute, Lecture Theatre D).  Information for final-year students in the School delivered by Dr Antonia Wilmot-Smith (Director of Teaching).

Careers and Internship Options in Mathematics and Statistics will also be covered as part of the Induction Session for Final-Year Students in Maths and Statistics by Dr Bhavya Rao of the Careers Service while a staff member from the Centre for Academic, Professional and Organisational Development (CAPOD) will also contribute to the induction talks to convey what they can offer new and returning students.

Computing workshop for students on 2000-level MT modules

An introduction to the use of computing in Mathematics and Statistics for students registered on 2000-level MT modules will also take place during Orientation Week.  Students on 2000-level MT modules should attend one of the following sessions, which take place in the Mathematical Institute Computer Classroom (Microlab):

  • Thursday 14th September, 2pm-3pm
  • Thursday 14th September, 3pm-4pm
  • Friday 15th September, 10am-11am
  • Friday 15th September, 11am-12noon
  • Friday 15th September, 2pm-3pm

(The five sessions above contain the same material)

This workshop, in the Python language, is compulsory for all students enrolled on a Mathematics or Statistics degree and taking level 2000 MT modules or for any student taking 30 credits or more of MT modules at level 2000 in a semester. Students taking a single level 2000 module in a semester should check with the module coordinator for that module to determine whether they should take the workshop.
