Entry to Honours

As detailed in the University policy on Entry to Honours (PDF, 525 KB), students are required to achieve sufficient good grades in their 2000-level modules in order to receive an offer to progress into an Honours programme.

Progression requirements

The School of Mathematics & Statistics requires students to achieve an average in the requisite modules to progress to Honours.  The following provides more details.

  • To progress to a BSc or MA degree involving Mathematics or Statistics, you should obtain an average grade of 11.0 or higher in the best four of the 2000-level modules taken (MT2501 to MT2508).
  • To progress to an MMath degree in Mathematics or Statistics, you should obtain an average grade of 15.0 or higher in the best four of the 2000-level modules (MT2501 to MT2508) with no more than two modules having a grade below 11.

These rules are found in the University Course Catalogue.  Please consult that document for full details of all possible Honours combinations and the requirements for Honours entry.

A student registered on an MMath degree who meets the requirements for a BSc degree but not those for the MMath will be accepted onto the BSc Mathematics degree.

Qualified Entry to Honours

The School of Mathematics & Statistics permits qualified entry to Honours based on grades achieved at a University-administered examination.  If you do not automatically achieve Honours entry (by failing to reach the thresholds listed above), then you may be permitted to take an examination to qualify.  Details are found in the University policy linked to above.

There is no qualified route for the MMath degree programmes.  A student who is on the BSc/MA (Hons) route can move to an Integrated Masters programme in third year if they attain an average grade of 15.0 in the best four Honours modules taken during the third year of study.

Requests for review of decision for Entry to Honours

Students who fail to meet the requirements for Entry to Honours and are consequently refused entry to their chosen degree programme are eligible to request a review of the decision.  For additional information and a list of admissible grounds for requesting a review please see: Entry to Honours Review Policy (PDF, 325 KB)
