Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee

The School's Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee aims to foster a supportive environment across the School that enables diversity and equality. The committee meets regularly with the goal of devising and implementing actions that will improve the School's work and study environment.

The committee is also responsible for applying for external accreditation such as Athena SWAN, and for organising events and activities that will enhance inclusion and celebrate diversity.

- To embed transparency and fairness in all School practices.
- To raise awareness of equality and diversity issues across all protected characteristics (including, but not limited to age, sex, disability, pregnancy and maternity, race, marriage and civil partnership, sexual orientation, religion and belief).
- To celebrate the School's successes, particularly for under-represented groups.
- To encourage the acknowledgement that academia cannot reach its full potential until it benefits from the talents of all.
- To identify concerns through biennial staff and student surveys and through EDI officers' annual review of data supplied by HR.
- To develop an action plan to improve equality and avoid bias.
- To share best practice with others to maximise the impact of the Athena SWAN Charter.
- To continue developing, implementing and monitoring of departmental action plans and submissions for Athena Swan Awards for good practice.
- Chairing of the School’s EDI Committee.
- Attendance at University and Science School EDI meetings.
- The coordination and submission of applications for external accreditation (e.g. Athena SWAN).
- The coordination of School EDI operational action plans and policies.
- Dissemination of University EDI policy updates and initiatives.
- To lead the coordination of School level EDI data and publications.
- Liaison with HoS and the reporting of EDI matters to School Management Committee and School Council.
- To provide advice and guidance to staff and students in relation to EDI concerns or queries.
- Working with the Wellbeing Officer to identify and deliver initiatives and actions that will improve the School’s work and study environment.
