At the next annual meeting of the AMS, during the SCRC gathering in New Orleans, 8-10 March, 2012, I shall step down from my two years as President of AMS. Where has AMS come in that time? The society has managed to establish itself quite steadily and determinedly with increasing solidity. Slightly more members have come to the gathering at SCRC: we are no longer quite in the position where nearly every member is also a society officer – not quite there anyway. And we have begun a presence at the annual conference of the Renaissance Society of America.
With just days to go before the deadline for submissions for the South-Central Renaissance Conference’s Exploring the Renaissance 2012, March 8-10, 2012, in New Orleans, Marvellians have one last chance to offer a paper for one of our designated sessions. Anyone who has attended Marvell sessions at SCRC in the past knows what a convivial and animated experience it is, and we hope you join us. The gathering in New Orleans is shaping up to be an exciting event for Marvellians, with a panel discussion of “The Gallery,” a plenary on Marvell and education by Lynn Enterline of Vanderbilt University, who is extending her recent exploration of Shakespeare’s Schoolroom (her book on which is appearing shortly from Penn) into the seventeenth century, and an array of fascinating submissions already under review (including an account of a new manuscript from Past President Nicholas von Maltzahn).
This article offers Marvell scholars—though not just those and certainly not all—a practical approach to some of the difficulties that they face as they pursue their research outside the research universities and research libraries. For some, it will be old news, even covered in an up-to-date course on Bibliography and Research Methods. Nonetheless, some of the following scholars may find it useful.
