Biography

Dr Claire Methven O'Brien is Baxter Fellow and Lecturer in Law at the University of Dundee, with expertise in business and human rights. She has extensive international experience of designing and delivering technical assistance on human rights and business to companies, public actors and civil society. She holds a PhD in Law from the European University Institute, Florence, and publishes and teaches on a range of human rights and business topics. She is Chief Adviser and Senior Researcher at the Danish Institute for Human Rights.

Claire worked with Professor John Ferguson on a project exploring how National Action Plans on Business and Human Rights may serve as a mechanism for strengthening business governance and social accountability.

With colleagues in the Accounting, Governance and Organisations thematic research group and the Centre for Social and Environmental Accounting Research, Claire has been investigating the implementation of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and UN Sustainable Development Goals. Another key focus has been the management curriculum around business and human rights.

Claire's recent books include Public procurement and human rights: Opportunities, Risks and Dilemmas for the State as Buyer and the Council of Europe's Business and human rights. A Handbook for Legal Practitioners.
