Dr Michael Rosko

Visiting Professor of Management

Dr Michael Rosko was in residence as Visiting Professor at the School of Management for the autumn of 2008 and 2015, and in summer 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018. Dr Rosko is Professor of Health Care Management at Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania. He is also Senior Scholar, Department of Health Policy, Jefferson Medical College and Adjunct Professor, Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a health economist and has published three books and over 90 articles.

The dominant theme in Dr Rosko's research has been the performance of health care organisations. He has examined how hospitals and nursing homes respond to: public cost containment initiatives such as the Medicare Prospective Payment System; payment policy by HMOs; and financial pressures associated with uncompensated care. He has examined the linkage between organisation characteristics and performance, including ownership type, teaching status, and health system characteristics.

Dr Rosko received the Inaugural Award for the Outstanding Researcher at Widener University. In May 2013 he received the Widener University Fitz Dixon Civic Engagement Award. Currently, Dr Rosko is analysing variations in the profitability of US hospitals with Manouchehr Tavakoli (University of St Andrews), John Goddard (Bangor University) and Mona Al-Amin (Suffolk University).

Dr Rosko is a member of the editorial boards of: Health Care Management Science and Medical Care Research and Review. He was an expert panelist on the Robert Wood Johnson sponsored study on hospital ownership and performance. He has lectured on health economics and financing issues at a number of international settings including INSEAD, University of Aberdeen and the University of St Andrews where he served as a visiting scholar. Dr Rosko received his PhD in Business Administration and MBA in Health Administration from Temple University. He was granted a BS degree in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania.
