Peter Dawson, OBE

Peter Dawson was appointed Secretary of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews and Chief Executive of The R&A in May 1999, succeeding Sir Michael Bonallack OBE. The role also encompassed the Joint Secretary position at the International Golf Federation and, in 2009, he led the IGF's successful bid to restore golf to the programme of Olympic Sports after an absence of 112 years. He became President of the IGF in 2010 and has overseen golf in the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing in 2014 and the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016.

Peter was awarded the OBE in 2015 for services to golf and in 2016 became Chairman of the Official World Golf Rankings.

Peter was born in Aberdeen in 1948 and graduated from Corpus Christi College, Cambridge in 1969 with an MA in Engineering and Business Studies.

His subsequent business career had been in the engineering sector, with over 25 years' experience at Chief Executive level.

Peter is an accomplished golfer, a member of the R&A since 1994, and served on its Rules Committee from 1994-1998. He plays to a handicap of 4.
