Biography

François-Regis joined the School of Management at the University of St Andrews in May 2016. After a double degree in management (EM Lyon Business School) and in Information Technology, Management and Organizational Change (University of Lancaster), he started his career as a management accountant working for AXA and Rhodia. He then decided to embrace an academic career and to complete a doctorate in sociology at Sciences-Po Paris obtained in 2009. Prior to his move to Scotland, François was research assistant at EM Lyon and then associate professor at Audencia Business School (in Nantes, France). François enjoys conducting field studies involving interviews and non-participant observations. From a theoretical point of view, he has developed a strong interest in the work of the sociologist G Simmel and has acquired over time a good knowledge of Michel Henry's phenomenology.

Research interests

François' work mostly deals with critical approaches to management accounting practices. In addition to a strong personal interest in the social and organisational impacts of accounting tools and practices, he particularly enjoys interdisciplinary research projects involving collaborations with colleagues from different management disciplines such as human resources, IT, strategy and entrepreneurship. François has published on the phenomenology of management control systems and how they distort the managers' perception of work done by others. He has also conducted collaborative work on the power of visualisation in management and more specifically on the performative role of accounting figures in generating collaboration, mediation and envisioning organisational strategy. More recently, he has developed an interest in tension management mechanisms to prevent conflicts in relationships between venture capitalist and owner managers. All his research nourishes a particular attempt to promote in the classroom reasonable uses of financial accounting tools in order to generate constructive doubt and diversity in opinions.
