The Valentine View Registers
Thursday 26 March 2015
After five months of diligent scanning, the Special Collections Division is very happy to announce that all James Valentine & Sons View Registers are now digitised and available online. Between 1878 and 1966 detailed logs were kept, listing each photographic image taken by the company. These are often noted as “JV-XXXX” on the bottom of Valentine prints and postcards. All records were kept in 41 registers and have been a very important resource for researchers over the years. The View Registers are now available online in PDF format.
You can access these from within the online database record on our website via the ‘supplementary resources’ section in the side panel. The first item in the list is a small booklet about the Valentine Collection that should help you decipher the registration numbers.
The image quality and resolution for the individual view registers is quite high as some of the text can be difficult to read. Please note that this means that some of the files are very large and you may find they could take a bit of time to download if you are on a slower connection.
A very special thank you is extended to Jennifer Rinterknecht and Ines Fonseca for their meticulous work and skilful juggling of their busy scanning days in order to complete this project.
The list of individual pdf documents can be found in the side panel under ‘Supplementary resources’.
