The collection comprises papers relating to Hugh Cleghorn, first Colonial Secretary to Ceylon, and other members of the Cleghorn family, 18th-19th century. The collection includes family and estate papers relating to Strathivie, but the bulk of the papers relate to Cleghorn's business activities, diaries of trips to India and Ceylon, organisation of the Madras Exhibition in 1855 by Hugh F C Cleghorn, as well as 18th century lecture notes and correspondence.
