Most of our resources, whether electronic or paper, are available to students studying at a distance from the University.
We are here to help so if you have problems accessing any of our resources or finding the information you need, please contact us. The Academic Liaison Team can offer support, either by phone or email or in person in the Library.
If you are looking for a specific book or journal, the best way to find it is to search SAULCAT, the Library's online catalogue. When searching for journal articles you need to search for the name of the journal and, where we have access to it electronically, click on the link in the catalogue record to connect to it. Make sure that you check that we have access to the year(s) that you are looking for.
Seeker is our search service which allows you to do a single search across most of the Library's online databases, as well as SAULCAT. Our Subject Guides provide detailed, subject-specific information.
To access electronic resources when you are away from the University, look for the login options on each different database or journal web page. Then look for either: 'UK federation WAYF'/ 'Institutional login'/ 'Login via your home institution'/ 'Shibboleth' login. Select 'University of St Andrews' and enter your university username and password when prompted.

A few databases may require onsite registration or a separate username and password. If you need further assistance please contact us: firstname.lastname@example.org.
We can post books out to addresses in the United Kingdom only, for distance learning or commuting students. You should provide details of the titles you want by email: email@example.com (please include class mark, author, title and year). There is a charge of £6.55 to cover postage costs by registered mail and insurance. You can then renew your books online, and if an item is recalled by another user we will let you know by email.
If you can’t get to the Library to return books, please post them to us. Post them to:

Where a journal article or book chapter is not available electronically we provide a photocopying service. To request photocopies please complete the Photocopy request form (PDF, 22 KB) and return it to us. There is a charge of £5.95 for this service; the charge will be added to your Library account.
When a journal article or book chapter is not available from our collections, distance learners can request scanned articles and chapters through our Inter Library Loan Service. These will be sent directly to your University email account.
We use email as the main way of communicating with students and we will only use University email accounts so it is important that you check this regularly.
