Gabriel Sewell

Gabriel has been Assistant Director since coming to St Andrews in November 2014. She is responsible for the Special Collections Division, which preserves, develops and promotes access to the manuscript, archive, photographic and printed heritage in the University’s care. The oldest item in the collection is a Greek papyrus dating from the first century AD.

Before coming to St Andrews Gabriel held the post of Head of Collections at Durham Cathedral, where she had responsibility for the management of the library collections, dating from the 6th century, and museum objects. She also worked at Lambeth Palace Library, where she had particular responsibility for reader services and all aspects of work relating to the Library’s printed book collections, which includes a 1455 Gutenberg Bible, the earliest book printed in Europe using movable type. Gabriel holds an MA in Modern History from the University of Oxford and an MA in Library and Information Studies from University College London.
