Enterprise competitions and funding

The KTC supports and encourages staff and postgraduates to enter enterprise competitions. Selected calls and programmes will be added to this page throughout the year. Undergraduates are supported by the Careers Centre.

Converge Challenge

Launched in 2011 Converge Challenge is a high-profile pan-Scotland company-creation competition and entrepreneurship development programme for staff, students, and recent graduates of Scottish Universities and Research Institutes aimed at creating a new generation of entrepreneurs in Scotland.

Converge Challenge 2017

In 2017, the total prize fund is valued at over £150,000. In addition to a cash prize, winning projects receive a comprehensive business support package from selected partner organisations. Highlights include:

  • Automatic eligibility to pitch to investors at EIE 2018.
  • A money can’t buy package from Royal Bank of Scotland, including their Innovation Gateway programme, access to the Open Innovation Centre in Edinburgh, a range of free cloud services and access to their global technology partner network.
  • Continued support from Firstport, Scotland’s development agency for start-up social entrepreneurs and social enterprise, providing ongoing business support and mentoring to the Social Enterprise category.

University of St Andrews successes in Converge Challenge

The University of St Andrews has an impressive track record having won Converge Challenge prizes in 2014 and 2016.

 Dr David Harris-Birtill winning Converge Challenge Kickstarter competition

In 2016, Dr David Harris-Birtill, a research associate at the University of St Andrews won the KickStart category with Beyond Medics Ltd: Automated Remote Pulse Oximetry, a camera-based system that remotely measures patients’ vital signs.

Dr Harris Birtill will now have automatic entry into the main Converge Challenge award category in 2017.
