What is Uniprint?

In 2012 IT Services rolled out a new managed print service for students and staff.  Over 160 ‘MFDs’ (multi-function devices) - have been installed across the University, including Halls of Residence.  Instead of only printing, these new devices can print, copy and scan, many of them in A3 and colour.  They are more energy efficient and ultimately should reduce paper consumption given their greater functionality.   This is a secure ‘pull’ print service – meaning you select print at your device (pc/laptop/Mac wired or wireless) – and then collect your print job at a time and location suitable to you (instead of paper churning out at the nearest printer).   The service is ‘managed’, which means IT Services are automatically alerted when a toner cartridge is almost empty. We also check paper stocks (of student devices) on a regular basis, therefore there should be very little down time. 

Members of staff can also use the student MFDs.  Your staff ID card will enable access to the device and your department’s cost centre will be charged for your usage at the end of each month – therefore you should check with your department’s budget holder.

Print, Scan and Copy on Uniprint

IT Services provides a multifunctional service in computer classrooms, Halls of Residence and in some study areas used by postgraduate students. Printing, copying and scanning is provided in these places by multifunctional devices. The devices operate on a pre-pay quota system; sufficient printer credit must be purchased before you can print.

UniPrint is a "pull" print system, which holds your print job(s) in a central location (print queue).  You can then retrieve your print job(s) from any public printer by logging in to the printer, either using your St Andrews ID card (new proximity cards only) or by entering your St Andrews user name and password on the printer.  You can then select which document(s) to print.

Duplex printing

All public printers are able to print double-sided documents and set to duplex as default.

Colour and A3 printing and copying

Colour printing and copying is available on some of the public printers, along with finishing i.e. stapling and A3 capacity.

Transparencies and Labels

Please note – Using the incorrect type of transparencies or labels can result in significant damage to the UNIPRINT devices.  This is not covered under the University’s support contact and users or departments may be held responsible for the full cost of repairs.

We strongly advise using only the following products:

  • Transparencies

Avery or Folex for use in copiers (not inkjets).  They must have a 12mm white strip down the long edge of the paper and are to be fed into the bypass tray with the white strip edge first.

  • Labels

 Avery for use in copiers (not inkjets), with no selvedge.

Tips for better printing

  1. If possible, do not leave important print jobs to the last minute.

  2. Try not to print PDF files, MS Word documents, or any other large documents directly from a web page.  Always download the file to the local computer before sending it to the printer.

  3. When saving downloaded files always rename the file using a short, sensible name.  Do not use quotation marks or similar symbols within file names or document titles.

  4. Don't send large documents to the printer as one job. Split a large document into smaller sections by printing a few pages at a time. Here is a rough guide to printing speeds relative to file sizes:

    • Documents less that 1MB in size should take less than a minute to arrive at the printer (plus a few seconds to print). 
    • Documents over 1MB will take roughly 1 minute per MB to appear on the printer, e.g., a 10MB print file will take approximately 10 minutes to arrive at the printer (plus another minute or so to print).

      N.B.  These sizes refer to a document's size after it has expanded to its working size, not the saved file's size on disk.

  5. Always use Print Preview before you print your file in order to see what your work will look like.  Correct any faults that you find before sending your file to the printing system.  Please be aware that your document may look OK on screen but can appear differently when printed out.

  6. If your file appears not to have printed do not immediately resend it to the printer.  Always check the print queue to look for your job through MyPrintContact the IT Service Desk to check if any problems have been reported or if there are delays in the system.
