Skype for Business

Skype for Business is an online communications tool that allows you to collaborate with students and staff anywhere in the world via instant messaging, voice and video calling, screen sharing and online meetings.

Skype for Business belongs to the Office 365 suite which is available for free to all students and staff in computer rooms, libraries, as well as personal devices. To download it to your personal, please check our web page.

Skype for Business and Skype

Skype for Business encompasses all the same features and functions as Skype, however, it:

  • Integrates with the rest of the Office apps, allowing you to use it directly from Outlook and share Word, PowerPoint and Excel files easily;
  • Allows instant messaging, facilitating and recording online meetings with more than 25 people;
  • Provides a more secure platform for collaboration.

How to access and use Skype for Business

CAPOD have created an online guide to help you learn the basics of Skype for Business. There are also some short films created by Microsoft to help you get started. If you have any further questions, please contact the IT Service Desk.

Conditions of use

Skype for Business is provided by the University for your benefit, but you need to be sensible about how you use it.
Specifically:

  • The University rule remains that students must check their email at least every 48 hours;
  • Skype for Business does not replace the preferred communication methods specified by academic and support staff. Unless a member of staff has explicitly asked you to contact them via Skype for Business, please avoid using it in that manner;
  • Staff are not required to reply to you should you contact them on Skype for Business, even if they appear 'available';
  • Avoid writing anything that would be considered offensive, defamatory or a breach of privacy;
  • Conversations that are saved in your Outlook folder are subject to disclosure under Freedom of Information or the Data Protection Act. This is the law and it is important that you should be aware of it.
