The University's email services for students and staff are powered by Microsoft, through Office 365.

Sending attachments

Because of limitations imposed upon our email systems you are unable to send attachments larger than 25MB. However, if using Outlook any attachment must be smaller than 18MB.

This limitation is because Outlook uses a system called base64 when encoding a binary file attachment, which increases the file size by a factor of 1.37x.

Therefore, if the attachment is a binary file, to allow for encoding, the maximum size that can be processed must be less than 18MB.

Mailing lists

There are different sorts of facilities which might come under the heading of "mailing list". You can keep private mailing lists as part of your own mail client program or you can set up lists which can be used by other people as well. There are two ways of managing shared lists at the University: using Sympa mailing lists or Microsoft Distribution lists.

Sympa lists can be used if you require to send messages outwith the University as well as to users with St Andrews accounts. Microsoft Distribution lists can be used if all the recipients have St Andrews accounts.

Please contact the IT Service Desk if you want further information and/or you wish to have a mailing list set up. In the future, we hope to allow list owners to administer their own lists. When this is completed instructions will be made available.
