V&A Dundee museumThe role of design in product and service development

PhD Student: Sarah Cox

Design Dundee Ltd (DDL) is driving the V&A at Dundee project, which will open the new V&A museum in late 2014. The building will combine galleries and retail functions as well as Design in Action, a space for learning, research, and knowledge exchange for practicing designers. Sarah's project will support this latter facility.

Using the knowledge base of design, Sarah will integrate its research and development principles into SME and micro-business practitioners’ ways of working, as mechanisms to help develop new products and services thereby stimulating innovation. The language of art and design will be used as the foundation for interfacing with SMEs, as an opportunity for practitioners to develop their practice. In a broader perspective the project also will investigate the role of design as an economic driver, underpinning innovation and economic development.

DDL is a partnership between the V&A, the University of Dundee, Abertay University, Dundee City Council and Scottish Enterprise.

Company partner: Design Dundee Ltd

Academic partners: Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, University of DundeeSchool of Management
