New digital business models for the screen industries

CASE Studentship/Knowledge Transfer Partnership with Creative Scotland

PhD Student/Knowledge Transfer Associate: Michael Franklin

Scotland’s screen enterprises have new tools to sharpen their competitive edge in global markets thanks to this Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) conducted during 2010-2012 and now being continued by Michael as a PhD CASE Studentship. Both projects have been sponsored by Creative Scotland (formerly Scottish Screen).

As the KTP project's research Associate, Michael transferred knowledge between the two organisations. His work explored how a variety of new business models can help the screen industries improve their performance in the era of digital technologies.

Based full-time within Scottish Screen’s Glasgow headquarters, Michael had daily access to industry development advisors, policy makers and screen enterprises. From there he analysed new digital business models for the development, production and exploitation of films and their impacts on all elements of the industry.

The KTP provided invaluable insight to Creative Scotland regarding the ways in it invests in film, the returns it looks for, the legal framework for that process and how relevant data is collected, collated and analysed. From a position where film investment was strictly segmented across the film value chain, a strategic shift has been made to integrate marketing and distribution concerns in a far broader sweep of investment programmes.

World-wide, companies are racing to meet the challenges and opportunities of the digital revolution to ensure long-term viability. New technologies are enabling firms to build, access, and interact with audiences earlier and to a far greater degree than previously possible. Michael’s continuing doctoral studies of these developments will further inform best-practice support for the industry.
