GARNETT, JOHN [SSNE 8457]
Text source
John Garnett was a privateer in the 1650s. In January 1657, he violently seized the Charity of London (bound for Bergen) between Gravesend and Tilbury. Garnett and his crew did so on the basis that he had a letter of reprisal from Sweden against Denmark-Norway. Garnett placed eleven men armed with pistols and cutlasses on the Charity, and they kept the crew under close guard. The Charity was taken to Orford Ness where they abandoned the crew and took the ship away.
